I had been wrong about something important.
I just didn't know how much of what I believed was wrong.
I sat across from Mr. Fenwick with a small blue tin in my lap.
My hands rested against its sides.
I kept looking down at it, then back at him.
There was a question I couldn't get past.
Why hadn't anyone told me what was happening?
Why had I been left outside something that involved my own mother?
I finally asked him.
“Why didn't you get in touch with me?”
Mr. Fenwick didn't seem surprised.
He answered carefully.
“Your mother asked me not to.”
I stared at him.
That wasn't what I had expected.
I had been prepared to hear that nobody knew how to reach me.
Or that someone had forgotten.
Instead, he was telling me the silence had been deliberate.
My mother had made that decision herself.
At least, that was what he was saying.
I tried to understand it.
She had wanted me kept out of contact.
But only up to a point.
Mr. Fenwick explained that her instructions included exceptions.
There were things that could happen that would change what he was supposed to do.
Until then, he had been expected to respect her wishes.
I looked at the tin again.
I didn't understand why my mother would arrange something like that.
Then he told me what she had been afraid of.
My sister.
Not a stranger.
Not someone outside our family.
Her own daughter.
Mr. Fenwick said my mother had reason to think my sister was keeping watch over the ways she communicated with people.
For a moment, I couldn't answer.
I had come into that room with questions about the house.
Now I had a question about everything that had happened before the house was sold.
How much had my mother been able to say?
Who had been listening?
And why had she believed she needed instructions that kept certain conversations hidden?
I didn't have those answers.
Mr. Fenwick hadn't offered them yet.
But the way I understood my mother's silence had already changed.
I had thought she wasn't reaching out.
Now I had to consider whether she had been afraid to.
