PART 22 – Thomas Admits He Removed Claire’s Embryo From Westbridge, but the Reason He Gives Exposes Patricia’s Most Dangerous Backup Plan

Thomas surrendered the information before prosecutors forced it from him.

That was how his lawyer phrased it.

Claire thought the distinction was generous.

He had been confronted with a courier receipt bearing his initials and only then decided honesty was useful.

The interview happened at the district attorney's office.

Claire was not present.

Cole briefed her afterward.

"Thomas admits taking custody of the transport canister."

Claire stood near Angela's office window.

"Why?"

"He says Patricia asked him to."

"That's not a reason."

"He believed your embryo would be safer outside Westbridge."

Claire turned.

"Safer from whom?"

"According to him, Patricia said the clinic was becoming unreliable."

Claire laughed sharply.

"After she helped make it unreliable."

Cole nodded.

"What did Thomas think was inside the canister?"

"Your embryo."

"So he knew it survived."

"Yes."

Claire felt anger flare.

"He sat in Angela's conference room and acted like he didn't know what happened to it."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"He's now admitting that was a lie."

"How refreshing."

Angela lifted one eyebrow but said nothing.

Claire asked, "Where did he take it?"

"Brightstone Biomedical Storage."

"The private company."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Patricia had opened an account there."

Claire stared.

"In whose name?"

Cole paused.

"Ryan's."

That made her skin crawl.

"Did Ryan know?"

"Thomas says no."

"Do we believe him?"

"We verify."

Claire paced once across the room.

"What was Patricia planning?"

Cole opened a folder.

"Thomas says the embryo was a backup."

Claire stopped.

"Backup for what?"

"He says Patricia believed the embryo transferred to Megan might have a disputed identity."

Claire's heart pounded.

"So she kept mine."

"That's what Thomas says."

"To do what?"

"Potentially another transfer."

Claire stared.

"Into whom?"

Cole looked at her.

"Thomas says he didn't know."

Claire laughed without humor.

"That sentence should be engraved on the Parker family crest."

Angela intervened.

"Did Thomas know the first embryo might be Dalton's?"

"Yes."

Claire froze.

"He knew before Laura's scheduled transfer?"

"Yes."

"Then why did he help remove mine instead of disclosing?"

Cole's voice stayed neutral.

"Thomas says Patricia convinced him disclosure would destroy Ryan's marriage to Megan, trigger litigation, and jeopardize Lily before she was born."

"Lily already existed as a pregnancy."

"Yes."

Claire looked toward the floor.

Again.

Preserve the family unit.

Even if preserving it required stealing another embryo.

"What exactly was the backup plan?"

Cole hesitated.

"Patricia wanted one unquestionably Parker-Bennett embryo preserved under her control."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Mine."

"Yes."

"For Ryan."

"Presumably."

"Not for me."

"No."

Claire opened her eyes.

"Did Thomas understand that?"

"He says eventually."

"When is eventually?"

"After he delivered the canister."

Claire stared.

"Convenient."

Cole continued.

"Thomas says he confronted Patricia afterward."

"About what?"

"Whether she intended to use the embryo without your consent."

Claire almost smiled bitterly.

"And Patricia said?"

Cole looked down at the notes.

"She said consent could be handled later."

The phrase made Claire's stomach turn.

Handled.

Forged again.

Bought again.

Bypassed again.

"What did Thomas do?"

"He says he told her no."

"And then?"

"Nothing."

Claire laughed.

"Nothing."

"Yes."

"He didn't call me."

"No."

"He didn't call Westbridge."

"No."

"He didn't call police."

"No."

"Then his no was useless."

Cole did not disagree.

Angela asked, "What happened to Brightstone?"

"Financial trouble. Regulatory violations unrelated to this case. It closed."

"Where did client specimens go?"

"Most were transferred to two licensed facilities."

"Most."

"Yes."

Claire hated that word.

"What about mine?"

"We found an inventory record."

Her pulse accelerated.

"Where?"

"Transferred to Meridian Reproductive Storage."

Claire gripped the back of a chair.

"Does it still exist?"

"Yes."

"Is the embryo there?"

Cole looked at her.

"We don't know yet."

"Why not?"

"Because the identifying information on the transfer manifest is incomplete."

Claire's chest tightened.

"What name?"

"Ryan Parker."

"Of course."

"No patient number."

"What identifier?"

Cole read it.

"FP-2."

Claire closed her eyes.

Family Preservation.

Two.

"What was FP-1?"

Cole looked at her.

"We think Lily's transfer."

Claire sat.

Patricia had numbered them.

A plan with stages.

FP-1.

Transfer Megan's embryo.

FP-2.

Preserve Claire's actual embryo elsewhere.

A backup child.

A backup asset.

A backup route to the trust.

"What if Lily hadn't satisfied the trust?" Claire asked.

Angela understood first.

"If genetics were challenged."

"Or if the pregnancy failed."

Claire felt sick.

"Patricia could try again."

Cole nodded.

"That appears plausible."

"With my embryo."

"Yes."

"Using another carrier."

"Potentially."

Claire remembered all the names.

Emily.

Nicole.

Megan.

Maybe others.

"Did she identify someone?"

Cole turned a page.

"Thomas says she did."

Claire went still.

"Who?"

"He only remembers a first name."

She waited.

"Caroline."

Claire searched memory.

Nothing.

"Last name?"

"He doesn't know."

"Relationship?"

"Thomas says Patricia described her as someone who owed the family a favor."

Claire felt disgust.

"What does that mean?"

"We're investigating."

The next Lily visit happened under a different shadow.

Ryan attended.

It was the first time Claire, Ryan, Megan, Laura, and Lily had occupied the same supervised space.

Dana had warned everyone beforehand.

No legal discussions.

No accusations.

No adult conflict.

Anyone who violated the rule would leave.

Ryan arrived first and stood near the window.

Claire entered second.

For several seconds they simply looked at one another.

He appeared exhausted.

"Hi."

Claire nodded.

"Ryan."

No more.

Laura came next.

Ryan's body visibly tightened.

Laura noticed.

She stopped several feet away.

"I'm not here to take her from you today."

Ryan looked ashamed.

"I know."

Megan entered carrying Lily.

The room changed instantly.

Lily saw Ryan and reached toward him.

"Dada."

This time the word was unmistakable.

Ryan's face collapsed.

He took her carefully.

Laura looked away.

Claire watched all of them.

Biology mattered.

History mattered.

Attachment mattered.

Truth mattered.

None erased the others.

Ryan kissed Lily's forehead.

"Hi, bug."

Claire had heard him use the nickname before in videos.

Now she saw what it did to Lily.

She smiled immediately.

Laura's eyes filled.

Dana quietly offered her a tissue.

Claire moved closer to Laura.

Not touching.

Just near.

Ryan noticed.

Something softened in his expression.

Later, Lily crawled between all four adults with the casual entitlement of a baby who assumed everyone existed for her convenience.

She brought a block to Claire.

A spoon to Laura.

A stuffed rabbit to Megan.

Then climbed against Ryan's knee.

Dana observed without visible reaction.

Claire could see the future becoming complicated in real time.

But complication was not automatically harm.

Dishonesty had caused the harm.

Maybe honesty could support complexity.

Afterward, Ryan stopped Claire in the hallway.

"I told Cole everything."

Claire looked at him.

"Everything?"

"About the trust."

"I already knew."

"About Brightstone."

She became still.

"You knew."

"Not at first."

"When?"

"After Lily was born."

Claire stared.

"Your mother told you she moved my embryo."

"Yes."

"And you did nothing."

Ryan's eyes dropped.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I thought keeping it frozen was better than destroying it."

Claire almost laughed.

"You still don't understand."

"I do."

"No. You keep grading yourself against the worst possible thing."

Ryan looked at her.

"I didn't destroy it. I didn't transfer it. I didn't forge your name."

Claire stepped closer.

"But you knew it had been stolen from my control."

His face tightened.

"And you left it there because maybe one day it would benefit you."

Ryan could not deny it.

Claire looked at him for another second.

"That's the part you keep refusing to name."

He swallowed.

"Selfishness."

"No."

She shook her head.

"Entitlement."

The word landed harder.

Claire continued.

"You believed your desire to preserve an option mattered more than my right to know the option existed."

Ryan looked down.

"Yes."

For the first time, he did not soften it.

Claire walked away.

That evening, Meridian Reproductive Storage called investigators.

They had found FP-2.

The canister had been transferred correctly from Brightstone.

The embryo was still frozen.

Claire sat down when Angela told her.

"Alive?"

"Viable according to storage status. No one has thawed it."

Claire covered her mouth.

After months of wrong labels, false deaths, crossed families, and hidden transport, her embryo still existed.

"Genetic confirmation?"

"Pending."

Claire nodded through tears.

"Good."

Angela waited.

Then she said, "There's another complication."

Claire laughed weakly.

"Of course."

"Meridian has an authorization document for future transfer."

Claire's tears stopped.

"Signed by whom?"

"Ryan."

"And me?"

Angela's expression hardened.

"Supposedly."

Claire closed her eyes.

Another forgery.

"Carrier?"

Angela looked at the document.

"Caroline Mercer."

Claire had never heard the name.

"But there's no transfer date."

"No."

"When was it signed?"

Angela answered.

"Four months after Lily was born."

Claire felt cold.

Patricia had not stopped after success.

Even with Lily alive.

Even after the trust shares were triggered.

She had kept FP-2 ready.

The backup plan had become something else.

Not insurance against failure.

A plan for another child.
