PART 19 – Ryan Turns on Patricia When the Trust Shares Are Frozen, and His Confession Reveals Why He Chose Megan Over Every Earlier Carrier

Ryan called Claire at six twelve in the morning.

She almost ignored it.

Then she saw three missed calls from Angela and answered.

"What?"

Ryan's breathing was uneven.

"My mother knew."

Claire sat up.

"About the embryo mismatch?"

"Yes."

"After the transfer."

"No."

Claire went still.

"What?"

"Before."

Silence.

Claire turned on the bedside lamp.

"Where are you?"

"My office."

"Your car was there yesterday."

"I came back."

"What do you want?"

"I need you to listen."

Claire heard something behind his voice she had rarely heard during their marriage.

Defeat.

Not remorse.

Not yet.

Defeat.

"You've got thirty seconds."

"Patricia knew there was uncertainty before Megan's transfer."

Claire closed her eyes.

"How much uncertainty?"

"She knew the physical labels might not match the old database."

"And she proceeded."

"Yes."

"Why are you telling me this now?"

Ryan laughed bitterly.

"Because she lied to me too."

Claire felt no sympathy.

"Welcome."

"Claire."

"Keep talking."

Ryan inhaled.

"She told me Marissa had physically confirmed both embryos were ours."

"Did you ask for proof?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because I wanted to believe her."

"That's not an excuse."

"I know."

Claire almost missed the significance.

Ryan rarely said that.

He continued.

"I knew your consent wasn't real."

"Yes."

"I knew my mother was handling Marissa."

"Yes."

"I knew Megan had doubts."

"Yes."

Each admission sounded flatter than the last.

"Then what exactly did Patricia lie about that you think changes your role?"

"That the embryos were ours."

Claire's jaw tightened.

"You still stole one."

"I know."

"Stop saying that like it earns you anything."

"It doesn't."

The answer disarmed her slightly.

Ryan continued.

"I thought Lily was genetically yours and mine."

"So did I."

"I thought once she was born you'd eventually want to know her."

Claire felt anger ignite.

"That was the plan?"

"Partly."

"Use my compassion against me."

"No."

"Your mother already admitted that."

Ryan became silent.

Claire stood and walked toward the window.

"Why Megan?"

"What?"

"You approached Emily. Patricia approached Nicole. There were other possibilities. Why Megan?"

Ryan did not answer immediately.

Claire waited.

Finally he said, "Because you trusted her."

The words were worse than she expected.

She gripped the curtain edge.

"Say more."

"If the carrier was someone you knew, I thought eventually you might accept it."

Claire felt physically ill.

"You thought using my friend would make it easier."

"At first."

"At first."

Ryan's voice cracked.

"Then I fell in love with her."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Before or after you decided she should carry my embryo?"

Silence.

"You still don't know, do you?"

"No."

For once, the uncertainty sounded genuine.

Ryan continued.

"I was angry at you."

Claire almost laughed.

"Because I miscarried?"

"Because you disappeared from the marriage."

"I was grieving."

"I know that now."

"No. You knew it then. You just didn't like what grief required from you."

Ryan said nothing.

Claire continued.

"You wanted a wife who was recovering on your schedule."

"Maybe."

"You wanted a child on your schedule."

"Yes."

"You wanted embryos under your control."

"Yes."

The admissions stopped feeling powerful.

They were merely late.

"What changed after the trust shares were frozen?"

Claire asked.

Ryan's voice hardened.

"My mother."

"Of course."

"She pushed the deadline."

"You let her."

"Yes."

"She forged my name."

"I knew the form wasn't genuine."

"She bribed Marissa."

"I knew Marissa was being paid."

Claire froze.

That detail was new.

"How much did you know?"

"I knew my mother had offered her money."

"You knew."

"Yes."

"Before the transfer."

"Yes."

Claire felt rage rise so fast she had to sit.

"Then stop presenting yourself as somebody Patricia manipulated."

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I'm telling you because I want her to stop controlling the story."

Claire laughed.

"Ryan, the story is no longer yours to control."

Silence.

Then Ryan said quietly, "I know."

Another phrase that arrived years too late.

Claire looked at the clock.

"Why did Patricia risk the wrong embryo?"

"I asked her last night."

"And?"

"She said Marissa told her the physical labels were probably right."

"Probably."

"Yes."

"Patricia risked another family's embryo because she was racing a trust deadline."

"Yes."

"And you went along because you wanted a biological child."

"Yes."

Claire thought of Lily.

Not Ryan's.

Not Claire's.

Yet raised for ten months as his daughter.

"What do you feel about Lily now?"

Ryan did not answer.

Claire's stomach tightened.

"Ryan."

"I don't know."

She closed her eyes.

"That is the most dangerous answer you've given me."

"Don't."

"No. Listen to me. Whatever you did, whatever your mother did, Lily has known you as her father since she was born."

"I know."

"Her genetics did not change yesterday. Your information did."

Ryan began breathing harder.

"You think that's easy?"

"No. I think it's devastating."

He was silent.

Claire softened only slightly.

"But if you punish her because you lost the biological claim you built everything around, then every terrible thing I've learned about you was pointing here."

Ryan whispered, "I love her."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Then act like it."

He began crying.

Claire had heard Ryan cry only twice before.

After his grandfather died.

After their second miscarriage, though he had hidden in the garage while doing it.

Now he cried without hiding.

"I changed every diaper for the first six weeks because Megan couldn't stand up without pain," he said. "I walked her at three in the morning. I know which song makes her stop screaming in the car."

Claire listened.

"Then none of that vanished."

"But she's his."

"Michael Dalton is dead."

"I know."

"Laura is her genetic mother."

"I know."

"Megan carried her."

"I know."

"And you raised her."

Silence.

Claire continued.

"Lily doesn't need you to decide which adult gets to own the title. She needs you to stop making your identity more important than her stability."

Ryan's crying quieted.

Claire surprised herself.

She was talking to the man who had stolen her embryo and accidentally transferred someone else's.

Yet she still wanted him to remain a good father to Lily.

Maybe because she finally understood something Patricia never had.

Love was not made safer by excluding everyone else.

Ryan said, "Laura wants me removed."

"No, she doesn't."

"How do you know?"

"I spoke to her."

Silence.

"What does she want?"

"A gradual legal transition. Accurate parentage. Medical history. Continued stability."

Ryan sounded disbelieving.

"She isn't trying to take Lily?"

"Not immediately."

"Why?"

"Because she's thinking about Lily."

The accusation landed.

Ryan knew it.

"I'll cooperate with testing."

"It's already established."

"My own."

"Fine."

Claire rubbed her forehead.

"Anything else?"

Ryan hesitated.

"Yes."

She waited.

"Patricia kept documents at the lake house."

Claire became still.

"What documents?"

"FP files. Trust calculations. Copies of clinic records."

"Why are you telling me?"

"Because she's destroying things."

Claire stood.

"How do you know?"

"I saw bags in the fireplace last night."

"Did you stop her?"

"No."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Of course not."

"I took one box."

Her eyes opened.

"Where is it?"

"My office."

"Do not touch it."

"I already did."

"Ryan."

"I'm sorry."

"Call Cole."

"I don't trust him."

"I don't care."

"Claire—"

"If you're actually trying to help, you call the detective investigating the destruction of evidence. You do not deliver a mystery box to me."

Ryan was silent.

Then he said, "Okay."

Claire ended the call and immediately contacted Cole.

Within an hour investigators had the box.

Patricia's lake house was secured under a warrant that afternoon.

The recovered materials were extensive.

Trust projections.

Carrier profiles.

Correspondence with Reeves.

Copies of Claire's signatures.

Clinic forms.

A handwritten timeline.

Cole showed Claire only what she was legally permitted to see.

The timeline began years earlier.

Emily.

Nicole.

Megan.

Arthur deadline.

Transfer.

Birth.

Trust shares.

Every event reduced to dates.

Then Claire noticed one line after Lily's birth.

CONFIRM GENETICS ONLY IF REQUIRED.

Her stomach tightened.

Patricia had written it.

"She knew testing could expose the problem," Claire said.

"Apparently."

"Did Ryan know?"

"We don't know yet."

Claire stared at the note.

Another line followed.

IF ISSUE, PRESERVE FAMILY UNIT FIRST.

Claire almost laughed.

Family Preservation.

Even after the transfer, the phrase remained the same.

Not preserve truth.

Not preserve rights.

Preserve the unit Patricia had chosen.

Cole turned the page.

One final notation appeared.

MUST KEEP CLAIRE AWAY FROM LAB RECORDS.

Claire stared at it.

The smug grin at the clinic suddenly returned to her memory.

Patricia had seen Claire in the waiting room and believed Claire was merely a failed former wife receiving more fertility treatment.

She had mocked her.

Boasted about Lily.

Warned her not to make things ugly.

Patricia had not realized Claire already knew enough to threaten everything.

That moment had been the mistake.

Arrogance had opened the door secrecy built.

Claire looked at Cole.

"What happens now?"

"Prosecutors are preparing charges."

"Against Patricia?"

"Yes."

"Ryan?"

"Yes."

"Marissa?"

"Likely."

"Thomas?"

"Still under review."

"And Jenna?"

"We have to find her."

Claire nodded.

Then Cole handed her one additional photocopy.

"This was in the box."

A laboratory transfer worksheet.

Megan Ellis.

Embryo identifier.

Cryostorage code.

Claire's eyes moved down.

At the bottom someone had handwritten:

J.V. confirmed mismatch. Proceed per P.

Claire stopped.

J.V.

Jenna Vale.

Confirmed mismatch.

Not uncertainty.

Confirmed.

Proceed per Patricia.

Claire's skin went cold.

"Patricia knew for certain."

Cole nodded.

"And Jenna did too."

"Yes."

Claire looked at him.

"Find her."

"We will."

But the note had already changed the case.

The wrong embryo had not been transferred accidentally.

Someone recognized the mismatch.

And they proceeded anyway.
