PART 18 – Lily Met Daniel Under Federal Surveillance, and His Reaction to the DNA Question Revealed Keene Had Lied to Him About Her Conception Too

The park had three entrances.

Federal agents controlled all of them.

Daniel did not know that.

At least, Reyes hoped he did not.

Lily wore a recording device beneath her jacket.

I watched from a surveillance van with Michael and Reyes.

Harris remained at the warehouse with Samuel and Evelyn.

Leonard had been detained for further questioning about the hotel incident.

For the first time since this began, one person involved in our history was exactly where authorities could see him.

Daniel arrived at 6:12 p.m.

He came alone.

Dark coat.

No visible bag.

He walked toward a bench near the river and sat.

Lily approached from the east path.

My hands tightened in my lap.

Michael noticed.

He placed his hand over mine.

The contact startled both of us.

He almost withdrew.

I turned my palm upward.

He stayed.

On the monitor, Lily stopped six feet from Daniel.

He stood.

“You came.”

“You told me to.”

His eyes moved behind her.

“You’re not alone.”

She said nothing.

He gave a tired smile.

“Of course not.”

“Sit.”

He did.

Lily remained standing.

Daniel looked older than in the photographs.

Not dramatically.

But tiredness had settled into him.

“I know about Harris,” she said.

His face changed.

“So he finally told you.”

“Did you know Susan was your sister?”

“No.”

“When did you find out?”

“After you were born.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it is true.”

“How?”

“My father told me.”

“What did you do?”

Daniel looked toward the river.

“I tried to kill him.”

I stared at the monitor.

Lily’s voice remained level.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Margaret stopped me.”

“Why?”

“Because she said if I went to prison, Keene would have one less obstacle.”

Lily sat now.

“Did you know Keene manipulated the pregnancy?”

Daniel looked sharply at her.

“What?”

Reyes leaned closer to the audio.

Lily said, “The donor code doesn’t match you.”

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

“That isn’t possible.”

“Why?”

“Because Keene told me it worked.”

“What worked?”

His jaw tightened.

“Getting you conceived.”

“How?”

He looked away.

“Daniel.”

“I tampered with contraception.”

“Anything else?”

“No.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes.”

“Did you give Susan fertility medication?”

“No.”

“Arrange a procedure?”

“No.”

“Provide biological material to Keene?”

Silence.

My skin chilled.

Lily leaned forward.

“Did you?”

Daniel finally nodded.

“When?”

“Before I approached Susan.”

My stomach turned.

Lily asked, “Why?”

“Keene said he needed samples to verify the trust requirements.”

“What kind of sample?”

“Sperm.”

The van went silent.

Lily’s voice hardened.

“And you gave it to him.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know what he planned to do with it?”

“No.”

“Do you expect me to believe that?”

“I expected to father a child.”

“Through sex.”

“Yes.”

“Then why give him a sample?”

“Because he said the trust required genetic validation before activation.”

Lily laughed without humor.

“He lied to you too.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What donor code?”

“CH-17M.”

All color left his face.

“No.”

“You recognize it?”

“Yes.”

“Whose?”

Daniel stood.

Agents shifted outside.

Lily remained still.

“Sit down.”

He looked around now.

“Where did you get that code?”

“Answer me.”

“Lily.”

“Whose?”

Daniel lowered himself slowly.

“William Carter.”

That confirmed Harris and Samuel.

Lily’s eyes narrowed.

“Why would Keene use William’s stored material?”

Daniel shook his head.

“He couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“William’s samples were destroyed.”

“When?”

“1993.”

“Who told you?”

“My father.”

The trap closed again.

Harris.

Another unverifiable statement.

Lily said, “Maybe they weren’t destroyed.”

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

“If Keene used William’s material—”

“What?”

He stopped.

“What?”

“It changes why he wanted you.”

“How?”

“Because a Carter-line child conceived through Susan would satisfy a different clause.”

“What clause?”

Daniel stared at the river.

“The succession clause.”

Lily waited.

“If a direct Carter descendant existed through preserved genetic material, the trust could recognize the child as William’s biological descendant.”

My stomach turned.

“That would make Lily—” Michael began.

I finished.

“Genetically William’s daughter.”

And mine.

The man who raised me as my father could biologically be the father of my daughter.

Not incest by blood between William and me, because he was not my biological father.

But emotionally grotesque.

Lily asked the question herself.

“So Susan’s father could be my biological father.”

Daniel shook his head quickly.

“The man who raised her. Not her biological father.”

“I know.”

The distinction did nothing to soften it.

Lily looked down.

“Was that Keene’s plan?”

Daniel said, “I don’t know.”

“You worked with him.”

“For a while.”

“How long?”

“Until you were born.”

“That’s convenient.”

“I know.”

“What happened?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I learned there was a second plan.”

“What?”

“Keene did not intend to let Susan raise you.”

“We know.”

“No. I mean he never intended to let Margaret raise you either.”

Lily went still.

“Where was I supposed to go?”

“A family in Europe.”

“Who?”

“I never got the names.”

“For money?”

“Partly.”

“What else?”

“They were connected to one of the original investors.”

“Why did they want me?”

Daniel’s face twisted.

“Because of the genetics.”

The phrase sickened me.

“What genetics?” Lily demanded.

“The combined Carter-Harris research lines.”

“But if William was my father, I wouldn’t be Harris.”

“Through Susan.”

“She is Harris’s daughter.”

“Yes.”

The structure became clear.

Lily could carry Harris blood through me and Carter blood through William.

Both founding families.

No incest genetically between parents.

A deliberately engineered child carrying both lineages.

My skin crawled.

Lily realized it too.

“I was designed.”

Daniel shut his eyes.

“Possibly.”

“Don’t say possibly if you knew.”

“I did not know Keene planned artificial conception.”

“But you knew he wanted a child from both lines.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Susan was Harris’s daughter?”

“No.”

“Then how could you think I would carry both?”

Daniel looked confused.

“I thought Susan was William’s biological daughter.”

That mattered.

Daniel had believed Susan was Carter.

He believed himself Harris.

Their child would combine both families.

Keene knew Susan was actually Harris’s daughter.

That would not work.

Unless William’s stored material was used.

Keene had corrected for the secret Daniel did not know.

Lily said, “Keene knew Susan’s real father.”

“Yes,” Daniel whispered.

“Then he knew a child between you and Susan would be Harris-Harris, not Carter-Harris.”

Daniel stared at her.

The horror arrived slowly.

“He never intended me to be the biological father.”

Lily said nothing.

“He used me to get close to Susan.”

“Yes.”

“He used the affair to create the conditions.”

“Looks that way.”

Daniel covered his face.

I felt no sympathy.

Then I did.

Only a little.

Enough to make me angry at myself.

He had victimized me.

Keene may have victimized him.

Both could be true.

Lily removed a sterile DNA kit from her bag.

Daniel looked up.

“What’s that?”

“Truth.”

She placed it beside him.

“You give a supervised sample.”

He looked toward the trees.

He knew now.

Agents.

Surveillance.

No privacy.

No control.

“Federal?”

“Yes.”

He almost smiled.

“Good.”

That surprised everyone.

“You agree?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I need to know too.”

Lily stared at him.

“What if you’re not my father?”

Daniel’s expression changed.

Something unguarded appeared.

“I don’t know.”

“Would that make you feel relieved?”

He answered after a long pause.

“Partly.”

“Would it make you stop caring?”

“No.”

She looked away.

Daniel swabbed his cheek under the observation of an agent who approached after Lily signaled.

Chain of custody began properly this time.

Before agents led him away for questioning, Lily asked one final question.

“Where is Keene?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“Where would he go?”

“If he thinks Samuel has the ledger?”

“Yes.”

Daniel considered.

“To the foundation archive.”

Reyes spoke through Lily’s earpiece.

“Ask where.”

“Where?”

Daniel looked directly toward the surveillance van.

He knew we were listening.

“Beneath the old Carter-Harris clinic.”

I felt cold.

The clinic.

A place from fragmented memory.

White hallway.

My mother driving me home.

Procedures I never understood.

Daniel continued.

“Keene kept physical records there long after the clinic closed.”

“Address.”

He gave it.

Reyes immediately dispatched a team.

Daniel added, “If Keene goes there, don’t let Susan inside.”

Lily frowned.

“Why?”

“Because there’s a room she remembers.”

My pulse jumped.

“What room?”

Daniel stared toward the van.

“The one they used in 1990.”

I could feel him speaking to me now.

“Tell Susan the red door was real.”

The memory hit before he finished.

A red door at the end of a clinic hallway.

A nurse opening it.

My mother telling me not to be afraid.

A mask descending toward my face.

I gasped.

Michael turned.

“What?”

I could not answer.

Because beneath that memory came another.

A man standing behind the red door.

Younger.

Thomas Keene.

Not an attorney.

Not merely my father’s legal adviser.

Wearing a white coat.
