PART 12 – Derek Used Lily to Draw Us Out, but the Message He Left Behind Revealed He Was Running From a Secret Bigger Than Divorce

Lily was safe.

Sarah repeated that fact until it became something she could stand on.

Lily was safe with her father.

The man who appeared at the school never reached her.

Staff had refused to release a child without proper authorization, then contacted Emily after noticing discrepancies in the information he provided.

Security footage showed the visitor.

It was not Derek.

Sarah stared at the image.

The man wore a baseball cap and glasses. His face was partially obscured, but he was heavier than Derek and several inches shorter.

"He used Derek's name," Emily said.

Mia nodded.

"Which means either Derek sent him or someone wants us to think he did."

Emily paced.

"I don't care which. Somebody went after my daughter."

Police increased protection around Lily.

Emily wanted to leave the secured residence and go to her.

Officers advised against it.

For the first time since arriving, the sisters argued.

"I'm her mother."

"And if this is designed to make you run straight to her?" Sarah asked.

Emily turned.

"You think I'm staying here while she's scared?"

"She's with her father and police."

"She needs me."

Sarah stood.

"I know."

"No, you don't."

The words landed.

Emily regretted them instantly.

Sarah's hand moved toward her abdomen.

Emily closed her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Sarah nodded once.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Then Sarah said, "That's exactly why they chose Lily."

Emily looked at her.

"They knew you would stop thinking about safety."

"I am thinking about my child."

"Yes."

Sarah's voice softened.

"And whoever did this knew you would."

Emily sat.

The manipulation was different from Derek's usual methods only in scale.

Find the person someone loved.

Apply pressure there.

Mia's phone rang.

Police had found something at the school.

A sealed envelope had been left beneath the windshield wiper of Emily's former parking spot.

Inside was a disposable phone.

The phone contained one video.

Derek appeared on-screen.

Sarah watched from behind Mia.

He was alive.

No visible injuries.

He sat against a plain wall wearing a dark sweatshirt.

He looked tired but composed.

"If you're watching this," he began, "then things have gone further than they needed to."

Emily muttered, "You think?"

Derek continued.

"Sarah, I know you've convinced yourself that I'm responsible for everything you've found."

Sarah felt her pulse rise.

"Some of it is true."

Mia paused the video.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"Admission."

She restarted it.

Derek said, "I lied about the vasectomy. I moved money. I made decisions I shouldn't have made."

Sarah stared.

He admitted them with the tone of a man confessing to missing an anniversary.

"But Victor is manipulating the rest. He kept records specifically so he could change context later."

Derek looked directly into the camera.

"Your first pregnancy was not something I caused."

Sarah's throat tightened.

"I never wanted you harmed."

Emily laughed bitterly.

The video continued.

"The medication was supposed to help with anxiety and sleep. Victor told me it was safe."

Sarah looked at Dr. Evans's notes lying on the table.

Derek was already rebuilding.

Not denial.

Minimization.

Shared blame.

He said, "I didn't know you were pregnant when you took it."

Sarah whispered, "Liar."

Mia nodded.

The letter to Margaret contradicted him.

Derek continued.

"Jessica is lying because she's afraid of charges. Aaron is lying because he falsified records. Victor is lying because that's what he does."

Everyone else was the liar.

Derek remained the only reliable narrator in Derek's world.

Then his expression changed.

"Margaret doesn't know everything."

Sarah leaned closer.

"I kept things from my mother because she would have stopped me."

Emily scoffed.

"That's convenient."

But Sarah watched carefully.

Derek's eyes moved off-camera.

For the first time, he seemed nervous.

"There is one thing you need to understand."

A pause.

"Victor wasn't hired originally to watch you."

Sarah frowned.

"He was hired to investigate my father."

Mia stopped the video.

"What?"

Sarah looked at her.

"You didn't know?"

"No."

Derek's father, Thomas Collins, had died four years earlier.

Heart attack.

Sudden.

Margaret had been devastated.

Sarah had helped organize the funeral.

The video resumed.

"My father discovered financial irregularities connected to the company before he died. He believed people were moving money through vendors."

Sarah looked at Mia.

Corporate fraud.

Victor.

The hidden accounts.

The cabin.

Everything suddenly stretched further backward.

Derek said, "He hired Victor privately. After Dad died, I found the reports."

Emily whispered, "Then Victor worked for his father first."

Mia nodded.

On-screen, Derek continued.

"I should have taken them to police."

He swallowed.

"I didn't."

"Why?" Sarah whispered.

The recording answered.

"Because some of the money led to my mother."

Sarah stared.

Margaret.

Derek said his father had discovered Margaret helping route money through shell companies.

At first she claimed she was protecting family assets.

Then Thomas found larger transfers.

Derek inherited the evidence after his father's death.

Instead of exposing Margaret, he used it.

He approached Victor.

He learned the structure.

He began moving money himself.

Sarah felt almost dizzy.

Derek had not created the machinery.

He had inherited it.

Then expanded it.

The video continued.

"Victor knows where everything is."

Derek leaned closer to the camera.

"That's why he can't be trusted."

Mia muttered, "Or that's why Derek fears him."

Derek said, "Sarah, the house was never the real money."

Sarah's breath caught.

"The accounts you've found are nothing compared to what's hidden."

Emily looked at Mia.

"How much?"

No answer.

Derek continued.

"My mother knows some locations. Victor knows others. Jessica knows enough to get herself killed if she keeps talking."

The room went still.

Sarah remembered Jessica saying Derek planned to kill her.

Now Derek was presenting himself as the one warning them.

He looked exhausted.

"For years, money moved through medical vendors, consulting companies and property entities. Some of those records connect to my employer. Some connect to people much more powerful than me."

Mia paused again.

"That may explain why Victor wanted protection from someone other than Derek."

Sarah nodded.

The video resumed.

Derek looked directly into the camera.

"If you keep digging, this stops being about our marriage."

Sarah felt anger rise.

"Our marriage stopped being about our marriage a long time ago."

Emily touched her arm.

Derek continued.

"I can give you what you need to protect yourself and the babies."

Sarah almost laughed.

Protect.

The word sounded obscene in his mouth.

"But you need to stop Mia from turning over Victor's financial records until we talk."

Mia smiled coldly.

"There it is."

Leverage.

Derek wanted something.

He always did.

"There's a file Victor doesn't have," he said. "My father kept it separately."

Sarah leaned closer.

"It proves where the money started."

A pause.

"It also proves what happened before he died."

Mia froze.

Sarah felt a chill.

Thomas Collins had supposedly suffered a heart attack.

Derek's next words made that fact suddenly uncertain.

"My father's death wasn't as simple as everyone thinks."

Emily whispered, "Oh, God."

Derek looked off-camera again.

"When I learned the truth, I made the worst decision of my life."

Sarah almost shouted at the screen.

Which one?

There were too many candidates.

"I protected my mother."

Margaret.

Derek continued.

"I told myself I was protecting the family. Then I became part of what I was hiding."

His voice sounded different now.

Not remorseful.

Defeated.

Sarah distrusted it more than anger.

"The original file is still hidden."

"Where?" Emily asked the recording.

Derek answered indirectly.

"Sarah has been closer to it than anyone."

She stared.

"What?"

"The first house we bought."

Sarah's pulse quickened.

They had sold that house six years ago.

A small brick property outside Raleigh.

Their first married home.

Derek's father helped with the down payment.

Thomas had visited constantly during renovations.

Sarah remembered him installing shelves in the basement.

Fixing a leaking pipe.

Building a cedar storage bench.

Her breath stopped.

The bench.

Thomas built it himself.

Derek had insisted they leave it when they sold the house because it was fitted against the basement wall.

The video continued.

"Behind what Dad built for you."

Sarah whispered, "The bench."

Mia looked at her.

"You know?"

"I think so."

Derek's voice continued.

"Do not go alone."

Then something struck the room where he was recording.

Derek turned sharply.

A door, perhaps.

His expression changed.

Fear.

Real or performed, Sarah could not tell.

He stood.

The camera shook.

A voice sounded beyond the frame.

Female.

Sarah could not understand the words.

Derek whispered something.

The recording ended.

Emily stared at the blank screen.

"Was that Margaret?"

Sarah wasn't sure.

Mia replayed the final seconds.

The woman's voice remained indistinct.

Police received the entire device.

The former house was located.

Its current owners were contacted under a carefully limited explanation.

They confirmed the cedar bench still existed in the basement.

Law enforcement obtained permission to inspect it.

Sarah was not allowed to go.

She waited at the secured residence with Emily.

Hours passed.

At nearly midnight, Mia received the call.

"They found a compartment."

Sarah stood.

"And?"

"Documents."

"What kind?"

"Financial records. Copies of vendor contracts. Account numbers."

Sarah waited.

Mia's face had changed.

"What else?"

"A letter from Thomas."

"To whom?"

"To you."

Sarah stared.

"Me?"

Mia nodded.

Thomas had written Sarah's name on an envelope years earlier.

The letter was eventually photographed and transmitted through investigators.

Sarah opened the image.

Thomas's handwriting was familiar.

Broad letters.

Heavy pressure.

Sarah,

If you are reading this, then I failed to correct something I should never have allowed to grow.

She swallowed.

The letter described Margaret's financial schemes.

Thomas's suspicion that Derek knew more than he admitted.

His fear that confronting them directly would cause evidence to disappear.

Then came a paragraph about Sarah.

You are kinder to my son than he understands how to value.

Sarah stopped.

Emily took her hand.

She continued reading.

Thomas wrote that he had watched Derek become increasingly controlling.

He noticed how Derek spoke for Sarah.

How he discouraged her work.

How he managed information.

Thomas had confronted him once.

Derek responded by accusing his father of interfering.

The final paragraph made Sarah's chest tighten.

If Derek ever makes you believe you cannot survive without him, that is the moment you most need to leave.

Sarah began crying.

Not because Thomas had predicted everything.

Because somebody had seen her.

Years earlier.

Before she saw herself.

Mia turned to another document.

"There was something else behind the bench."

Sarah wiped her face.

"What?"

"A second envelope."

"For me?"

"No."

"For Derek?"

Mia shook her head.

"Margaret."

Sarah stared.

Thomas had written his wife a letter too.

The contents were shorter.

More direct.

He accused Margaret of stealing through vendor accounts.

He said he had proof.

He said he intended to meet federal investigators.

The letter was dated three days before his death.

Sarah felt the room become silent.

"Did he meet them?"

"Apparently not."

"How did he die?"

"Officially? Cardiac arrest at home."

"Who found him?"

Mia looked at the report.

"Margaret."

Sarah closed her eyes.

Then Emily asked the question none of them wanted to say aloud.

"Was there an autopsy?"

Mia checked.

"No."

Sarah thought of Margaret's insistence that Thomas hated hospitals.

Her refusal of further examination.

The rapid funeral.

The grief that had seemed unquestionable.

Mia's phone rang again.

This call was shorter.

She listened.

Then stood.

"What happened?" Sarah asked.

"Derek has been found."

Sarah's knees weakened.

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

Mia stared at her.

"At Margaret's house."

Sarah exhaled.

Then saw Mia's expression.

"What?"

"Margaret isn't there."

"Where is she?"

"They don't know."

Sarah felt cold.

Mia continued.

"Derek was locked in the basement."

Emily whispered, "By his mother?"

"That's what he claims."

Sarah looked toward the frozen frame from Derek's video.

The female voice.

The sudden fear.

The warning that Jessica could get herself killed.

The hidden records.

Thomas's letter.

Derek had spent years convincing Sarah that he was the person controlling the board.

Now the possibility emerged that he had learned the game from someone else.

Mia's phone buzzed with one final message from the investigator.

She read it twice.

Sarah saw the color leave her face.

"What now?"

Mia looked up.

"They found medication in Margaret's kitchen."

Sarah's pulse stopped for a beat.

"What medication?"

Mia did not need to answer.

Sarah already knew.

It was the same drug found in the frozen food Derek had prepared for her.

And beside it, police found an old prescription bottle.

The name printed on the label was Thomas Collins.
