Mia would not let Aaron leave until she had photographed every page inside the envelope.
There were messages from Derek stretching back five months.
Some concerned the clinic.
Some concerned money.
Some were written in the same clipped style Sarah knew from a thousand ordinary texts about groceries and dinner plans.
Seeing Derek's language attached to something calculated made the deception feel more intimate.
One message read: Need enough documentation that she won't question the procedure.
Another: She'll never ask to see the actual surgical record.
Another: No digital trail connecting J to this.
Sarah pointed.
"J."
Mia nodded.
"Likely Jessica."
Aaron shook his head.
"Derek never used her name with me."
"But you saw them together."
"Yes."
Mia turned the page.
Near the bottom was a newer message.
If anyone contacts you, say Sarah arranged it. You misunderstood who you were helping.
Sarah stared.
There it was.
No inference.
No interpretation.
A written instruction.
"He already tried to frame me," she said.
Aaron looked miserable.
"I told you."
Mia photographed the message twice.
"Why didn't you turn this over sooner?"
"Because I could lose my license."
"You may."
He looked down.
"But cooperating matters."
Mia was not comforting him.
Sarah appreciated that.
Aaron had helped Derek lie.
Fear did not erase that.
Still, he might be the reason the larger truth became provable.
Mia asked, "When did Jessica contact you?"
"Yesterday afternoon."
"Number?"
"Blocked."
"Did she leave a voicemail?"
"No."
"Text?"
"No."
"Anything documenting it?"
Aaron hesitated.
Then he removed another phone from his pocket.
A small prepaid device.
"I recorded the call."
Sarah's pulse jumped.
Mia stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because after Derek started threatening me, I recorded everyone connected to him."
He played the audio.
Jessica's voice emerged from the tiny speaker.
Calm.
Almost friendly.
She said Derek was under enormous stress.
She said misunderstandings had occurred.
Then she offered Aaron ten thousand dollars to clarify that Sarah had initiated the deception.
Aaron asked what exactly she wanted him to say.
Jessica answered without hesitation.
Say Sarah wanted Derek to believe the vasectomy worked so she could later claim the pregnancy was impossible to explain.
Sarah pressed her fingers against her lips.
The plan was absurd.
But she understood why Jessica believed it might work.
Derek had already told the public Sarah was manipulative.
If they could make the medical fraud appear to be Sarah's scheme, the paternity result itself could be twisted into evidence of entrapment.
Emily had been right.
Derek built narratives.
When one collapsed, he built another.
Mia stopped the recording.
"We need a copy."
Aaron nodded.
"You can have everything."
Sarah looked at him.
"Why now?"
His expression changed.
"Because Derek doesn't just want me quiet anymore."
"What does he want?"
"Me blamed."
Sarah thought of Jessica's call.
"He'll sacrifice you."
Aaron gave a humorless smile.
"You're only realizing that about him now?"
The question hurt.
But Sarah did not look away.
"Yes."
Aaron's face softened slightly.
"He told me you were unstable."
"Of course he did."
"He said you'd destroyed your marriage with fertility obsession."
Sarah felt Emily's absence sharply.
Her sister would have had something brutal to say.
Instead Sarah asked, "Did you believe him?"
"At first."
"And now?"
Aaron looked at the printed messages.
"Now I think he needed everybody to believe a different version of you."
Mia gathered the evidence.
"We're done for tonight."
Outside, the parking lot was almost empty.
Emily unlocked the car as Sarah approached.
"Well?"
Sarah got in.
"He has proof."
"Good."
"Jessica tried to bribe him."
Emily turned.
"What?"
"She wanted him to say I arranged the fake procedure."
Emily's face went still.
"That is insane."
"It's strategic."
"No. It's both."
Sarah leaned back.
Streetlights moved across the windshield as Emily drove.
After several minutes Sarah said, "I think Jessica's scared."
"Why?"
"Because she reached out personally."
"Derek usually handles the dirty work?"
"Or someone else does."
Emily glanced at her.
"The Tahoe."
Sarah nodded.
They did not discuss it further until they reached the house.
The black Tahoe was parked half a block away.
Emily slowed.
"There."
Sarah's stomach tightened.
The vehicle's lights were off.
No one was visible through the tinted glass.
Emily did not pull into the driveway.
Instead she kept driving.
"Call Mia."
Sarah did.
Mia told them not to return home.
She contacted police and arranged for an officer to meet them nearby.
By the time they circled back twenty minutes later, the Tahoe was gone.
The officer took a report.
Without a plate number or clear threat, there was little else to do.
Sarah understood.
Still, the knowledge did not help her sleep.
The next morning, Mia filed supplemental materials related to the missing marital funds.
She did not immediately submit Aaron's evidence.
"Why?" Sarah asked.
"Because once Derek knows what we have, he will adjust."
"You want him to keep talking."
"I want him to make decisions based on incomplete information."
Sarah thought about how often Derek had done the same to her.
It felt strange to stop volunteering what she knew.
By noon, Derek's attorney requested an emergency conference.
His name was Charles Benson.
Mia described him as experienced, expensive, and rarely sentimental.
The conference happened remotely.
Sarah sat beside Mia in her office.
Derek appeared on the screen next to Charles.
Jessica was not visible.
Charles began.
"My client would like to resolve the financial restrictions without unnecessary escalation."
Mia responded, "Then your client can return the marital funds."
"They remain accounted for."
"Where?"
Charles glanced at Derek.
Derek said, "Protected."
Mia smiled without warmth.
"That's not a financial institution."
Charles continued.
"We are also concerned by Mrs. Collins's campaign to damage Mr. Collins professionally."
Sarah looked at Mia.
Mia did not react.
"What campaign?"
"Contacting his employer."
"We have not contacted his employer."
Derek leaned toward the camera.
"Stop lying."
Mia's expression hardened.
"Mr. Collins, direct your comments through counsel."
Sarah watched him.
His anger looked real.
That interested her.
If neither she nor Mia had contacted his company, somebody else had.
Charles cleared his throat.
"There has been an internal inquiry."
"Into what?" Mia asked.
Derek looked away.
Charles said, "Expense reporting."
Sarah felt Mia go still beside her.
"Interesting."
"It has nothing to do with this divorce."
"Then why bring it up?"
"Because information appears to be circulating."
Mia folded her hands.
"We haven't circulated anything."
Derek stared directly into Sarah's camera.
"You think you're clever."
Sarah said nothing.
"Sarah."
Mia touched her arm.
Do not engage.
Charles continued.
"My client is also willing to withdraw his earlier public statements regarding paternity now that testing has established biological parentage."
Sarah almost laughed.
Withdraw.
As if the damage were a document.
Mia replied, "He can issue a public correction."
Derek's face tightened.
"No."
"Then there is no agreement."
Charles turned toward him.
They muted themselves.
Sarah watched them argue silently.
Derek shook his head repeatedly.
Finally the sound returned.
Charles said, "My client is prepared to state that new medical information has changed his understanding."
Mia answered, "His understanding was not the problem. His accusations were."
Derek snapped, "She made me look like an idiot."
Sarah spoke before Mia could stop her.
"You did that yourself."
Silence.
Derek leaned closer.
For one instant Sarah saw the familiar expression from arguments years earlier.
The one that said she had violated a rule by speaking plainly.
Then Charles muted them again.
Mia looked at Sarah.
"Don't do that."
"I know."
"Did it feel good?"
"Yes."
Mia nodded once.
"That's why you shouldn't."
After the call, Mia received another message.
She read it.
Then looked at Sarah.
"Derek's employer didn't receive information from us."
"Who sent it?"
"They won't say."
"What are they investigating?"
"Corporate expenses connected to travel, lodging, and reimbursements."
Sarah remembered Derek's frequent business trips.
Jessica sometimes traveled with the same team.
"Could he have used company money for her?"
"Possibly."
Sarah's phone buzzed.
A message from Jessica.
We need to talk without lawyers.
Sarah showed Mia.
"Reply?" Sarah asked.
Mia considered.
"One sentence. Ask what about."
Sarah typed.
What do you want to discuss?
Jessica answered immediately.
Derek.
Then:
He lied to me too.
Emily arrived at Mia's office within half an hour.
She read the messages and said, "Trap."
Mia agreed it might be.
Sarah stared at Jessica's words.
He lied to me too.
Something about them felt less polished than Jessica usually sounded.
Another message appeared.
I didn't know about the fertility records.
Sarah looked up.
Neither she nor Mia had publicly mentioned those records.
"How does she know?"
Mia leaned closer.
"Good question."
Sarah typed carefully.
What fertility records?
The typing indicator appeared.
Then disappeared.
A minute passed.
Two.
Jessica finally replied.
The ones Derek took from the house.
Sarah stood.
"He took them?"
Mia's eyes sharpened.
"When?"
Sarah typed.
Which records did he take?
Jessica responded:
The originals showing his test results.
Sarah looked toward Mia.
The file at the house had contained copies.
Derek apparently held originals.
Then another message came.
He told me you knew he was the fertility problem.
Sarah's chest tightened.
No.
She wrote only that.
Jessica replied:
Then there's more you don't know.
Emily muttered, "I still don't trust her."
"Neither do I," Sarah said.
But distrust did not mean the information was useless.
Jessica asked to meet.
Mia refused to let Sarah go alone.
They selected a hotel lobby with cameras and heavy foot traffic.
Jessica arrived late.
She wore no sunglasses this time.
No polished confidence.
Her hair was pulled back carelessly, and dark circles showed beneath her eyes.
She looked at Mia.
"I asked for Sarah."
"Mia stays."
Jessica almost left.
Then she sat.
For a moment nobody spoke.
Finally Sarah said, "You tried to bribe Aaron."
Jessica's face drained.
"Who told you that?"
"Did you?"
Jessica looked at Mia.
Then at Sarah.
"Derek told me Aaron was extorting him."
"So you offered money."
"He said we needed Aaron to clarify what happened."
"By lying about me."
Jessica's jaw tightened.
"He told me you planned the whole thing."
Sarah stared.
"Did you believe that?"
"I didn't know what to believe anymore."
"That's convenient."
Jessica looked down.
"I know."
Sarah had never heard her sound ashamed.
It did not create sympathy.
But it changed the room.
Jessica folded her hands.
"Derek told me you knew about his fertility problems."
"I didn't."
"He said that's why you agreed to the vasectomy."
"There was no vasectomy."
Jessica closed her eyes.
"I know."
"Since when?"
"Yesterday."
Sarah leaned forward.
"How?"
"I found the folder."
"What folder?"
"Everything."
Jessica's voice dropped.
"The fertility results. Payments. The clinic messages. Your divorce agreement."
Mia interrupted.
"Where?"
Jessica looked toward the entrance before answering.
"In a storage unit."
Sarah's skin prickled.
"What else is there?"
Jessica looked directly at her.
"Things about you."
"What things?"
"Medical records. Copies of your emails. Photos."
Emily went rigid.
"Photos of what?"
"You."
Sarah felt suddenly cold.
Jessica continued.
"Your sister. Your house. Places you went."
The black Tahoe flashed through Sarah's mind.
"Who took them?"
"I don't know."
"Derek does."
Jessica shook her head.
"No."
Mia leaned in.
"What do you mean?"
Jessica whispered, "Derek isn't the person you should be most afraid of."
Sarah stared at her.
"Then who is?"
Jessica hesitated long enough to make the answer worse.
"A man named Victor Shaw."
