PART 4 – The More Mr. Fenwick Explained About My Parents’ Trust, the Harder It Became to Believe the House Sale Was What Mom Wanted

I kept coming back to one thing.

My mother had made a plan.

Not a casual request.

Not something she had mentioned and forgotten.

She had signed trust documents in 2019.

My father had been alive.

He had been present.

So had she.

And according to Mr. Fenwick, she had been fully aware of the decision she was making.

I tried to put those facts beside what he had already told me.

My mother had feared that my sister might be watching her communications.

She had instructed Mr. Fenwick to limit contact with me.

And she had named the unauthorized sale of her property as a reason those instructions should change.

I looked at the tin in my lap.

I had been listening to each fact separately.

Now they were beginning to fit together.

I thought about what my sister had claimed.

That the money from selling Mom's house was meant for her care.

It had sounded like an explanation for a decision that had already been made.

But Mr. Fenwick had introduced a much more serious question.

Had Mom ever agreed to the sale?

I still didn't know the full answer.

I knew only what he had told me.

My mother had been capable of understanding her trust.

Both my parents had participated in signing it.

And she had taken steps to ensure that someone would contact me under certain circumstances.

A sale without her permission was one of them.

That mattered.

It mattered more than anything I had previously been told about what was supposedly being done for her benefit.

I looked back at Mr. Fenwick.

I was no longer thinking only about the money.

I was thinking about my mother's wishes.

What she had decided when she still had my father beside her.

What she had tried to protect.

And why she had believed that protection might become necessary.

Mr. Fenwick had not yet explained the house.

But he had made one point clear.

Before I could understand whether its sale was legitimate, I needed to understand the trust my parents had established in 2019.

And for the first time, I understood why he had insisted on starting there.
