PART 8 – Victoria’s Unexpected Offer

Victoria contacted us again three days later.

This time, she invited my mother and me to meet her at a private office downtown.

Daniel came with us.

Victoria sat behind a polished desk overlooking the city.

She looked composed, elegant, and completely in control.

"I've reviewed your concerns," she began. "I would prefer to resolve this matter without unnecessary legal expense."

She slid an envelope across the desk.

Inside was an offer of money in exchange for our agreement to leave the house and release any claims connected to the Ashford property.

The amount was more than my mother had earned in several years.

It could pay our debts, cover Noah's education, and provide enough money for a modest apartment.

For a moment, I understood why people accepted offers like this.

We were tired.

We were frightened.

And we needed money.

Then Daniel examined the agreement.

He pointed to a paragraph requiring us to waive any future claims related to Thomas's estate or any undiscovered property records.

"This is broader than a simple relocation agreement," he said.

Victoria's smile disappeared.

"It's a standard settlement."

"Not with this language."

My mother pushed the envelope away.

"I won't sign something that prevents my children from learning what happened to their father."

Victoria looked directly at her.

"After all these years, you still believe Thomas was innocent?"

"I believe he deserved the truth."

For the first time, Victoria seemed genuinely angry.

"You have no idea what your husband did."

My mother stood.

"Then tell us."

Victoria said nothing.

We left without signing.

Outside the office, I asked Daniel whether the offer meant we were close to proving something.

He was careful.

"It means they want a broad release. That alone doesn't prove wrongdoing. But it makes a thorough review even more important."

I looked back at the building.

Victoria had offered us enough money to start over.

All we had to do was stop asking questions.

I knew then that I couldn't accept.

Not yet.
