PART 16 – Aaron’s Hidden Role in Michael’s Last Drive Reversed Everything Again, and Detective Chen Found the Message That Put Him at Aspen Ridge

Detective Chen immediately tried tracing Thomas’s call.

It had bounced through a masked number.

No useful location.

No easy answer.

She looked irritated for the first time.

“He expected that.”

Grace crossed her arms.

“He expected Vivian to be with police?”

“Probably.”

I stared at the dead phone screen.

Thomas had known the timing of everything else.

Why not this?

Daniel returned to the AC folder.

“Search Aaron’s financial records.”

The forensic technician nodded.

Chen allowed Daniel to identify relevant filenames but not alter anything.

We stood around the dining table while years of hidden accounting opened one layer at a time.

Aaron Cole had not simply managed one successor entity.

He had created six.

Money entered one.

Moved to another.

Paid contractors.

Covered property expenses.

Returned as investment distributions.

Some transfers flowed to Julian’s developments.

Others flowed somewhere else entirely.

“How much?” I asked.

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I need time.”

“Estimate.”

Grace said, “Careful.”

Daniel nodded.

“Based on what I can see immediately, several hundred thousand.”

“Michael’s money?”

“Some.”

“Whose else?”

“Other investors.”

Julian stared at the screen.

“Aaron always said he was cleaning up Thomas’s mess.”

Daniel laughed once.

“He may have been creating his own.”

Beatrice sat beside Elena, two women who would have despised each other under any normal version of this morning.

Neither spoke.

Both watched the numbers.

Detective Ortiz entered from the foyer.

“We found Cole’s car.”

Chen stood.

“Where?”

“Parking garage downtown.”

“Cole?”

“No.”

“Cameras?”

“Checking.”

Elena looked at me.

“He could be anywhere.”

Chen nodded.

“That’s why everyone stays put.”

Julian paced toward the window.

“If Thomas knew Aaron rerouted Michael, why wait four years?”

I looked at him.

“Maybe he didn’t have proof.”

Daniel spoke.

“Or maybe proof was leverage.”

Grace nodded.

“Against Aaron.”

“Against Richard.”

“Against everyone.”

I thought of the hidden room.

Photographs.

Phones.

Names.

Tomorrow’s date.

Thomas had not behaved like a whistleblower.

He had behaved like someone preserving pressure.

Truth as currency.

Evidence as control.

Not justice.

Leverage.

The forensic technician stopped.

“I found deleted messages.”

Chen moved beside him.

“From when?”

“Four years ago.”

“Sender?”

“Aaron Cole.”

“To?”

He looked toward Julian.

“Julian Harrington.”

Julian stopped pacing.

“What?”

The technician opened the recovered conversation.

Most messages were ordinary business.

Project budgets.

Meeting times.

Payment approvals.

Then the date changed.

The week Michael died.

Aaron: HE KNOWS ABOUT THE TRANSFERS.

Julian: I KNOW.

Aaron: HE HAS THE OLD AGREEMENT.

Julian: I KNOW.

Aaron: IF HE SHOWS VIVIAN WE’RE ALL FINISHED.

Julian stared.

“I remember these.”

No one responded.

The next messages.

Julian: DAD IS HANDLING IT.

Aaron: THAT SHOULD SCARE YOU MORE.

Beatrice closed her eyes.

Then, the day Michael died.

7:14 p.m.

Aaron: IS HE STILL GOING TO THE CABIN?

Julian: YES.

Aaron: DON’T LET HIM TAKE THE MAIN ROAD BACK.

Every person in the room froze.

I looked at Julian.

His face collapsed.

“What?”

I pointed.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“It says don’t let him take the main road.”

“I didn’t see that message.”

“Julian.”

“I swear.”

The technician checked.

“It shows delivered.”

“Not read?”

He examined metadata.

“Read receipt at 7:19.”

Julian stared.

“No.”

Grace’s voice hardened.

“You opened it.”

“I don’t remember.”

I almost laughed from exhaustion.

“The phrase again.”

He looked desperate now.

“I received dozens of messages.”

“On the night my brother died.”

“I didn’t know why Aaron said that.”

“Did you ask?”

The next message answered.

Julian: WHY?

Aaron: ROADWORK.

Julian closed his eyes.

“There.”

He pointed.

“He said roadwork.”

I stared at the screen.

“Was there roadwork?”

Detective Chen looked at Ortiz.

“Check.”

He left immediately.

The conversation continued.

Julian: LOWER ROAD?

Aaron: YES.

Julian: FINE.

My stomach turned.

Not murder.

Not explicit conspiracy.

But a choice.

Julian had accepted the route.

He had passed it on.

I remembered his statement from the recording.

He said Michael had taken the lower road.

Now we knew why.

“You told Michael to take that road.”

Julian swallowed.

“At the cabin.”

“How?”

“I said the main route was probably closed.”

“Because Aaron told you.”

“Yes.”

“And Pike was waiting on the lower road.”

“I didn’t know.”

I looked at him.

Maybe that part was true.

But ignorance no longer protected him from responsibility.

His choices had stacked one on top of another.

Each one small enough to explain away.

Together they built a road that ended with Michael below a guardrail.

The technician kept scrolling.

8:02 p.m.

Aaron: PIKE WILL HANDLE THE DELAY.

Julian went still.

I stopped breathing.

“You knew Pike was involved.”

“I knew he might stop Michael.”

“You just said you didn’t know.”

“I meant I didn’t know he was waiting on the lower road.”

The distinction was technically real.

Morally, it barely mattered.

I read the next line.

Julian: NO VIOLENCE.

Aaron: OBVIOUSLY.

Grace looked at me.

“That matters.”

I nodded.

It did.

Julian had explicitly rejected violence.

That did not make him innocent.

But it mattered.

Facts still mattered even when they complicated anger.

At 9:41 p.m., Aaron wrote again.

HE’S NOT LEAVING QUIET.

Julian: MICHAEL?

Aaron: YES.

Julian: HOW DO YOU KNOW?

No response for twelve minutes.

Then:

Aaron: I HAVE SOMEONE THERE.

Julian’s eyes widened.

“I never understood that.”

I looked at him.

“Who did you think?”

“I thought he meant Pike.”

The messages continued.

10:17 p.m.

Aaron: THOMAS FOUND OUT.

Julian: WHAT?

Aaron: HE KNOWS MICHAEL HAS THE AGREEMENT.

Julian: HOW?

Aaron: DOESN’T MATTER.

Julian: KEEP HIM AWAY FROM THIS.

Aaron: TOO LATE.

I stared.

Thomas had entered the night through Aaron.

Not Richard.

At least according to these messages.

“Did you tell Richard Thomas knew?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After ten.”

“What did he say?”

“That Thomas would make everything worse.”

Beatrice whispered, “That sounds like Richard.”

Julian continued.

“He told me to keep Michael at the cabin until he could speak to him.”

“Did you?”

“I tried.”

“Michael left.”

“Yes.”

The technician found another deleted thread.

Aaron and Thomas.

Chen leaned closer.

This one was worse.

Thomas: HE HAS EDWARD’S COPY.

Aaron: HE THINKS IT’S COMPLETE.

Thomas: IS IT?

Aaron: NO.

Thomas: GOOD.

I felt cold.

Michael’s partnership agreement had been incomplete?

Thomas: GET HIM TO LOWER ROAD.

Aaron: PIKE?

Thomas: RICHARD’S DOG. USE HIM.

Aaron: JULIAN THINKS IT’S JUST A DELAY.

Thomas: KEEP IT THAT WAY.

No one moved.

Julian sat down hard.

“You see?”

His voice shook.

“I didn’t know.”

I did see.

I also saw something else.

Aaron and Thomas had manipulated him.

But Julian had still hidden the trust notice.

Still concealed the police complaint.

Still delayed the ambulance.

Still protected himself.

Victim and participant were not mutually exclusive.

Chen continued reading.

Aaron: WHAT ABOUT RICHARD?

Thomas: LET HIM THINK THIS IS HIS PLAN.

Beatrice gasped.

Julian stared at the screen.

“What?”

Thomas: HE WANTS MICHAEL SCARED. FINE. WE NEED MICHAEL STOPPED LONG ENOUGH TO GET THE AGREEMENT.

Aaron: AND THEN?

Thomas: THEN HE CAN GO HOME.

I looked at Chen.

“That sounds like they weren’t planning to kill him.”

“At that point.”

She was careful.

Again.

Then the next exchange.

11:32 p.m.

Aaron: HE LEFT.

Thomas: WHICH ROAD?

Aaron: LOWER.

Thomas: PIKE IN PLACE?

Aaron: YES.

Thomas: I’M HEADING DOWN.

My skin prickled.

Thomas had placed himself on the road.

11:40.

Aaron: DO NOT TOUCH HIM.

Thomas: RELAX.

11:46.

Aaron: PIKE SAYS MICHAEL WON’T STOP.

Thomas: THEN MAKE HIM.

No reply.

11:49.

The time of Michael’s recording.

11:50.

Aaron: WHAT DID YOU DO?

Thomas: NOTHING YET.

11:52.

Aaron: PIKE HIT HIM.

Thomas: I SEE THEM.

I closed my eyes.

Thomas had witnessed the first contact.

11:53.

Aaron: GET OUT.

Thomas: JULIAN’S BEHIND HIM.

11:54.

Aaron: LEAVE.

Thomas: TOO LATE.

No more messages until 12:18 a.m.

Thomas: HE WENT OVER.

Aaron: IS HE ALIVE?

Thomas: YES.

Aaron: CALL 911.

Thomas: JULIAN’S THERE.

Aaron: CALL ANYWAY.

Thomas: NO.

I stared.

“Why no?”

The next line answered.

Thomas: IF MICHAEL TALKS, RICHARD BLAMES US.

Aaron: I DON’T CARE.

Thomas: YOU SHOULD.

Aaron: CALL.

No response.

12:24.

Aaron: THOMAS.

12:27.

Aaron: ANSWER ME.

12:31.

Aaron: I’M CALLING MYSELF.

The technician checked call records.

“Did he?”

Chen asked.

He searched.

“Yes.”

Everyone went still.

“When?”

“12:32.”

“Emergency services?”

“No.”

“Who?”

The technician frowned.

“A number registered to a private medical service.”

I stared.

“What kind?”

Daniel searched the company name.

“Concierge emergency transport.”

Grace frowned.

“Not 911.”

“No.”

“Where did they go?”

The technician followed associated records.

Then stopped.

“They canceled.”

“Why?”

“There’s a note.”

Chen read it.

CALLER ADVISED PATIENT REMOVED BY PUBLIC EMS.

I felt sick.

Aaron had finally tried to send help.

Too late.

But he had tried.

That did not absolve him.

He had helped redirect Michael.

He knew Pike was involved.

He participated in the trap.

But he may not have intended the crash.

Again, the truth refused to sort itself into clean categories.

Detective Ortiz returned.

“No roadwork.”

Julian stared at him.

“What?”

“There was no road closure on the main route that night.”

My eyes moved toward Julian.

He understood.

Aaron had lied.

Julian had repeated it.

Michael took the lower road because Julian believed a lie Aaron told him.

Chen looked at the technician.

“Anything placing Aaron physically nearby?”

“Searching.”

Minutes passed.

Then he found a photo.

Timestamp 11:38 p.m.

Taken automatically by a parking-app camera near Aspen Ridge.

A black sedan entering a private lot.

Plate visible.

Registered to Aaron Cole.

Elena whispered, “He was there.”

I stared.

Aaron had told us earlier that he was not at the crash.

He said Julian called him afterward.

He lied.

Daniel zoomed.

The parking lot belonged to the Alpine Crest.

Room 114.

The room Julian had booked.

The room Beatrice used to meet Pike.

Aaron arrived there after Beatrice left.

“What was Aaron doing at the motel?” Grace asked.

No one knew.

Then the technician opened another file.

Security video.

Alpine Crest rear entrance.

11:42 p.m.

Aaron walking out.

He was carrying something.

A document tube.

Michael’s road map?

The agreement?

The technician advanced frame by frame.

Another person appeared.

Elena gasped.

A man.

Older.

Thomas Vale.

They spoke briefly.

Thomas took the tube.

Aaron pointed toward the road.

Thomas left in a dark sedan.

Aaron stayed.

I stared at the screen.

“He sent Thomas after Michael.”

Chen said nothing.

We could not know yet.

But he had clearly met him.

Clearly handed him something.

Clearly lied about being nowhere near Aspen Ridge.

Then, at 12:06, Aaron left the motel in his car.

Three minutes after the official crash report.

He drove toward the mountain.

The next camera captured him at 12:17.

Near the lower road.

Close enough to have reached the crash site.

I thought of his behavior in my house.

The guilt.

The careful admission.

The way he gave us only enough truth to make Julian look central.

He had confessed to wrongdoing, yes.

But perhaps only the wrongdoing he believed we would eventually prove.

“What happened when he reached the crash?” I asked.

Chen looked at me.

“We don’t know.”

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

Chen nodded.

I answered on speaker.

“Aaron?”

Silence.

Then breathing.

Not Thomas this time.

Aaron.

“I need to talk to you.”

My voice felt cold.

“You already did.”

“I didn’t tell you everything.”

“No.”

“I know.”

“Where are you?”

“Not safe.”

“From whom?”

A pause.

“Thomas.”

Detective Chen signaled for me to keep him talking.

“You met Thomas at the Alpine Crest.”

Silence.

“You gave him something.”

Longer silence.

Then Aaron whispered, “You found the video.”

“Yes.”

“Then you know why I can’t come in.”

“I know you lied.”

“I lied because Thomas has spent twenty years making sure everyone has enough guilt to stay quiet.”

“What did you give him?”

Aaron breathed heavily.

“Michael’s copy.”

I stared at the phone.

“The partnership agreement?”

“Not the original.”

“What?”

“A partial copy.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas wanted Michael to think he’d found everything.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

“So he’d confront Richard.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas needed Richard to panic.”

“What for?”

“Leverage.”

I closed my eyes.

The entire night had been manipulated.

Richard wanted Michael frightened.

Aaron wanted the confrontation controlled.

Thomas wanted Richard panicked.

Pike wanted to be paid.

Julian wanted the problem to disappear.

And Michael had been trapped inside everyone else’s plan.

“What did you do after the crash?”

Aaron went silent.

“Aaron.”

“I went there.”

“I know.”

“Michael was still alive.”

My chest tightened.

“Was Julian there?”

“Yes.”

“Thomas?”

“No.”

“Pike?”

“Gone.”

“What happened?”

Aaron’s voice broke.

“Julian was kneeling beside Michael.”

I looked at my husband.

He closed his eyes.

“Did you call for help?”

“I told Julian to.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Michael looked at me.”

I gripped the table.

“And?”

“He knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That I had sent him onto the lower road.”

Nobody moved.

“What did he say?”

Aaron began crying.

“He asked why.”

I could barely breathe.

“What did you tell him?”

“The truth.”

“What truth?”

“That I was trying to recover the agreement before he reached police.”

“Then?”

“He told Julian not to trust me.”

I looked at Julian.

His eyes opened.

He had never mentioned this.

“You heard that?”

Julian nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“You hid that too.”

“Yes.”

I stared at him.

Aaron continued through the phone.

“Michael told me Thomas had played all of us.”

“What did he mean?”

“I didn’t understand then.”

“And now?”

Aaron’s voice dropped.

“Now I do.”

“What?”

“Thomas never cared who owned Cedar Ridge.”

I felt cold.

“What did he care about?”

“Destroying Richard.”

“Why?”

A pause.

Then Aaron gave us the first answer that reached beyond money.

“Because Richard was responsible for Thomas’s brother going to prison.”

Julian frowned.

“What brother?”

Beatrice whispered, “Nathan.”

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked stricken.

“You know him?”

She nodded.

“Thomas had a younger brother.”

“What happened?”

Beatrice’s lips trembled.

“Richard testified against him.”

“When?”

“Before Cedar Ridge.”

“For what?”

“Embezzlement.”

Aaron spoke through the phone.

“He didn’t embezzle anything.”

Silence.

“Richard did.”

My stomach turned.

Beatrice closed her eyes.

Aaron continued.

“Nathan Vale went to prison for money Richard moved.”

Julian stared at his mother.

“Is that true?”

She whispered, “I don’t know.”

Aaron said, “Nathan died there.”

The room seemed to shrink.

“And Thomas blamed Richard.”

“Yes.”

“So Cedar Ridge was revenge.”

“Eventually.”

“Michael?”

Aaron’s voice broke.

“Michael was never supposed to die.”

I looked at the phone.

“Then come in and say that to police.”

Silence.

“Aaron.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas knows where my daughter is.”

Detective Chen’s expression changed.

“You have a daughter?”

Aaron did not know she was listening.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“College.”

“What has Thomas done?”

“He sent me a photograph this morning.”

My skin prickled.

“Of her?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

Aaron began breathing harder.

“That if I speak, he finishes what Richard started.”

Chen wrote rapidly.

I asked, “Where are you?”

Aaron hesitated.

Then said, “The old Cedar Ridge site.”

Julian stood.

“That’s two hours away.”

Aaron whispered, “Thomas is here.”

The line went dead.
