PART 12 – The Harbor Address

The word "Harbor" appeared in one of the ledger's margins.

Beneath it was a partial address and a date.

Daniel researched the location and discovered that it corresponded to a warehouse district near the old river docks.

The building associated with the address had been sold several times.

Its current owner had no connection to the Ashford family, at least according to the available public records.

We requested copies of historical leases and business filings.

One document revealed that Thomas had rented a small storage unit under his own name shortly before disappearing.

The lease lasted six months.

Then it was terminated.

The storage company had since changed ownership, and the old records were incomplete.

Still, we now had a location where my father might have stored evidence.

We arranged a visit with the current property manager and explained our legal interest.

The original unit no longer existed.

But the manager found an archived inventory sheet listing a box of abandoned materials that had been transferred to a records facility years earlier.

The box had been labeled with Thomas's initials.

I felt dizzy.

My father had not simply vanished into the past.

He had left records behind.

And someone had preserved them, perhaps without understanding their importance.

Daniel submitted a formal request to inspect the archived materials.

While we waited, Victoria filed a legal response challenging our interpretation of the property records.

She argued that the documents did not establish our ownership and that the eviction process should continue.

Daniel expected the challenge.

He reminded me that we had not yet proved what the ledger meant.

"We're making progress," he said. "But we must remain careful."

I nodded.

For the first time, I understood that discovering a secret and proving it were two very different things.
