Daniel took the documents to an independent forensic accountant and a property specialist.
The initial review uncovered a complicated network of companies that had owned or managed parcels of land across the county.
Some transfers appeared legitimate.
Others raised questions about missing approvals, inconsistent signatures, and payments that could not be matched to the stated sales.
Then the accountant found my mother's name.
Evelyn Carter appeared in a handwritten section near the back of the ledger.
Beside it was a date from the year before my father disappeared.
There was also a reference to our house.
I stared at the page.
"Does this mean Mom owned the property?"
Daniel shook his head.
"Not by itself. A name in a ledger can mean many things. We need the underlying agreements and the complete chain of title."
He explained that the records might show my father had arranged a trust, a conditional transfer, or another legal mechanism intended to protect certain families.
But the exact structure remained uncertain.
We would need more evidence before drawing conclusions.
My mother looked devastated.
"I thought he had left us with nothing."
Daniel spoke gently.
"He may have been trying to protect something for you. We just don't know the full extent yet."
That evening, I studied the ledger at our kitchen table.
Several names appeared repeatedly.
Families who had lost property.
Companies that had received it.
Officials who had signed approvals.
And beside some of the entries were small marks that looked like references to supporting documents.
I copied the names into a notebook.
Then I noticed something strange.
One company appeared to have been dissolved shortly before Thomas disappeared.
Another had acquired a property for a price far below its assessed value.
The same company had later transferred the land to a business controlled by Victoria.
I wrote the connection down.
It wasn't proof of a crime.
But it was a lead that deserved investigation.
