PART 4 – The Missing Case File Revealed What Our Family Had Been Forced to Forget, but One Name Changed the Meaning of Everything

We left the house before sunset.

Valeria sat in the back seat with the folders pressed against her chest. My mother sat beside me in silence, staring through the windshield.

Nobody mentioned the message.

We all understood what it meant.

Someone was watching us.

We drove directly to Margaret’s office.

She was waiting in a small conference room with a stack of files on the table.

When she saw Valeria, she stopped breathing for a moment.

“My God.”

Valeria nodded.

“I know.”

Margaret closed the door.

“I need to see identification.”

Valeria handed her a temporary document.

Margaret studied it carefully.

“This is enough to start reopening the case.”

“Not yet,” Valeria said.

Margaret looked up.

“Why?”

“Because some of the people who helped make me legally dead still have access to records.”

Margaret's expression hardened.

She opened the oldest folder.

“I recovered this from storage.”

The file was incomplete.

Several pages had been removed.

Others had clearly been replaced.

Margaret spread the remaining documents across the table.

“This is the original investigation.”

My mother leaned closer.

“What does it say?”

Margaret pointed to a forensic report.

“The remains were never conclusively identified.”

I felt my stomach turn.

“Then why did the authorities say the DNA matched?”

Margaret looked at us.

“That result came from a laboratory report added later.”

“Later?”

“Three days after the funeral.”

My mother covered her mouth.

Valeria looked down.

“That was when they needed me officially dead.”

Margaret nodded.

“There is more.”

She pulled out another document.

“This report says the DNA sample used for comparison was compromised.”

“Compromised how?”

“The chain of custody was broken.”

My father had always told us the investigation was airtight.

It wasn't.

It had been constructed.

Piece by piece.

Margaret reached into another folder.

“I also found a property list.”

Several addresses were marked.

Valeria recognized two.

“I was kept here,” she said, pointing to one.

Then another.

“And here.”

Margaret stared at the page.

“These properties were controlled by companies connected to your father.”

My mother closed her eyes.

For years, she had believed our family businesses were legitimate.

Now she was seeing the machinery underneath them.

“Why did nobody investigate?”

Margaret looked uncomfortable.

“Someone made sure they didn't.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Valeria looked at the table.

“I think I do.”

She took out one of the letters.

“This name appears repeatedly.”

She placed it in front of us.

It belonged to a former forensic specialist.

The same person who had signed the disputed DNA report.

Margaret recognized the name immediately.

“He disappeared six years ago.”

“Disappeared?”

“No forwarding address. No bank activity. No confirmed sightings.”

Valeria stared at the letter.

“He didn't disappear.”

Everyone looked at her.

“He helped my father.”

My mother whispered, “How do you know?”

“Because he visited me.”

Valeria explained that the specialist had come to one of the houses where she was being held. He had told her that the world believed she was dead and that no one would ever search for her again.

She remembered something else.

“He called my father by a different name.”

“What name?”

Valeria hesitated.

“Elias.”

My mother’s face changed.

I noticed it immediately.

“You know that name.”

She didn't answer.

“Mom.”

She looked at me.

“Your grandfather had a business partner named Elias.”

“What happened to him?”

“He died before you were born.”

Valeria leaned forward.

“Are you sure?”

My mother nodded slowly.

“He was involved in the first company your grandfather built.”

Margaret looked between them.

“This may go much deeper than the kidnapping.”

Valeria gave a humorless smile.

“I told you.”

She opened another folder.

Inside were property records dating back decades.

My father had inherited several companies from my grandfather.

Those companies had been used to create newer corporations.

Money had moved through them for years.

My mother looked sick.

“I married him because I thought he was building a life for us.”

Valeria reached across the table.

“You weren't the only one deceived.”

My mother began crying.

For the first time since Valeria returned, I saw the two of them holding each other without words.

I stepped away and looked through the office window.

A black vehicle was parked across the street.

Same shape.

Same dark windows.

My heart began beating faster.

I turned back.

“Margaret.”

She followed my gaze.

Her face changed.

“Don't move.”

The car remained still.

Then the driver's door opened.

A man stepped out.

He looked toward the building.

Valeria stood.

“That's him.”

“Who?”

“Daniel Mercer.”

The man crossed the street.

Margaret immediately locked the office door.

“Back exit,” she whispered.

We gathered the files.

My mother grabbed Valeria’s hand.

I took the USB drive.

The footsteps reached the hallway.

Then stopped.

A knock sounded.

Three slow taps.

Nobody spoke.

Another three.

Valeria looked at me.

“He knows we're here.”

Margaret opened a cabinet and revealed a narrow service door.

“Go.”

We slipped through.

As I pulled the door closed behind us, I heard a voice from the other side.

My father’s voice.

“Leo.”

I froze.

He spoke again.

“You have no idea what your sister is hiding.”

Valeria grabbed my arm.

“Don't listen.”

My father continued.

“If you want your mother alive, bring me the files.”

My mother stopped walking.

I looked at her.

She was trembling.

Then her phone rang.

The screen showed my father’s number.

She answered.

His voice came through quietly.

“Tell Valeria I know what she did to Chloe.”

Valeria went completely pale.

The call ended.

None of us moved.

“What does he mean?” I asked.

Valeria stared at the floor.

“I don't know.”

But the way she said it told me she was lying.
