Mia knew the name.
Sarah could tell before she said anything.
It was a tiny change in posture.
A tightening around the eyes.
"Victor Shaw?" Mia asked.
Jessica nodded.
Emily noticed too.
"You know him?"
"By reputation."
Sarah looked between them.
"What reputation?"
Mia answered carefully.
"Private investigations. Corporate security. Asset tracing."
Jessica gave a bitter laugh.
"That's the polite version."
"What version do you have?"
"He fixes problems."
Sarah disliked the phrase immediately.
"What does that mean?"
Jessica rubbed her palms together.
"He finds information people don't want found. He pressures witnesses. He scares people."
"Violence?"
"I don't know."
Emily crossed her arms.
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one I have."
Mia asked, "How does Derek know him?"
Jessica looked at Sarah.
"Through work."
Derek's employer sold medical technology across several states. He dealt with hospitals, purchasing groups and government-linked contracts.
Sarah had never understood much of his daily work because Derek preferred it that way.
"He hired Victor years ago," Jessica said.
"For what?"
"At first, business."
"At first?"
Jessica swallowed.
"Then personal."
Sarah felt the room become colder.
"What personal?"
"Checking on people."
"Who?"
Jessica looked away.
Sarah already knew.
"Me."
Jessica nodded.
Emily swore.
Sarah did not.
She could not find enough surprise.
"When?"
"Before we were together."
"How long before?"
"At least two years."
Sarah stared.
Two years before the affair.
That reached back into the period when she and Derek were still trying to conceive.
"What was he checking?"
"Where you went. Who you talked to."
Sarah's throat tightened.
"Why?"
"Derek said he thought you might leave."
Sarah almost laughed.
Leave?
At that time she had been building her life around him.
"What gave him that idea?"
"You talked about returning to work."
Emily looked at Sarah.
Sarah remembered.
Two years earlier, she had considered a position at a nonprofit where she used to work.
Derek discouraged it.
He said the commute would be exhausting.
He said fertility treatments required flexibility.
He said they did not need the money.
"Because I wanted a job?"
Jessica nodded.
"Derek said employment would give you options."
The sentence was so revealing Sarah felt almost detached from it.
Not a job.
Options.
That was what Derek feared.
Mia took notes.
"What else did Victor investigate?"
"Emily."
Emily straightened.
"Me?"
Jessica nodded.
"Your finances. Your divorce."
Emily's face darkened.
"Why?"
"Derek thought you'd convince Sarah to leave."
Sarah turned toward her sister.
Emily did not speak.
Jessica continued.
"He had Victor check Sarah's former coworkers too."
"Daniel?"
"Yes."
The sixty-year-old married coworker Derek had accused Sarah of sleeping with.
Sarah felt sick.
"He knew Daniel wasn't my lover."
Jessica looked confused.
"What?"
"When I told Derek I was pregnant, he suggested I might have cheated with Daniel."
Jessica's face changed.
"He knew Daniel had moved to Arizona."
Sarah stared.
"How?"
"Victor checked him."
That detail stripped away the last possibility that Derek's accusation had been spontaneous.
He named a man he already knew could not plausibly be involved.
It had been theater.
A script.
Mia asked, "How much did you know when the relationship with Derek began?"
Jessica stiffened.
"Not all of this."
"Answer specifically."
Jessica looked at Sarah.
"I knew he was unhappy."
Sarah said nothing.
"He said the marriage was effectively over."
"Yet you came to my house."
Jessica flinched.
"I know."
"You helped me choose curtains."
"I know."
"You drank wine with me while sleeping with him."
"I know."
Each answer became quieter.
Sarah stopped.
She did not want an apology yet.
She wanted facts.
"When did you become involved?"
The photographs were nine months old.
Jessica's answer matched.
"Did he tell you I cheated?"
"Eventually."
"When?"
"A few months after we started."
"So he began sleeping with you before his supposed reason for leaving me."
Jessica closed her eyes.
"Yes."
"Did he tell you about the vasectomy plan?"
"Pieces of it."
Sarah felt Emily shift beside her.
"What pieces?"
"He said he needed a clean ending."
"What does that mean?"
"He wanted you to accept the divorce without fighting over the house."
Sarah's chest tightened.
Jessica continued.
"He believed if you thought you'd betrayed him somehow, you'd feel guilty."
"How could I think I'd betrayed him if I hadn't?"
"He said pregnancy would do it."
Sarah stared.
Jessica's voice trembled.
"He knew there was still a chance you could conceive naturally."
The fertility records.
Derek knew his reduced motility was not the same as sterility.
He knew conception remained possible.
"So he pretended to make conception impossible."
"Yes."
"If I got pregnant afterward, he'd accuse me."
Jessica nodded.
"And if I didn't?"
"He planned to leave anyway."
Sarah sat back.
There it was.
The pregnancy had not caused the trap.
It had triggered one version of it.
"What was the other version?"
Jessica hesitated.
"Derek said he would make you think the marriage failed because you couldn't give him children."
Sarah closed her eyes.
Emily grabbed her hand.
The cruelty of it was so precise that Sarah could not immediately process it.
If she never became pregnant, Derek would weaponize infertility.
If she did become pregnant, he would weaponize pregnancy.
There had been no outcome in which Sarah was allowed innocence.
Mia's voice sharpened.
"Did you participate in planning this?"
Jessica's silence answered first.
Then she said, "Yes."
Emily stood.
Sarah caught her wrist.
"Sit."
"No."
"Emily."
Her sister looked at Jessica with open hatred.
Sarah understood.
But she needed the rest.
Emily sat.
Sarah asked, "What did you do?"
Jessica took a breath.
"I helped find the apartment."
"I know."
"I helped draft messages Derek could use with family."
Margaret.
Of course.
"What messages?"
"Things about you being distant. Secretive. Defensive."
"He sent them to his mother?"
"And some friends."
"Before I got pregnant?"
"Yes."
Sarah felt nauseated.
Derek had seeded his version before there was even an accusation to support.
Jessica continued.
"I helped him think through how people would react."
"People like me?"
"Yes."
"How did you think I would react?"
Jessica finally looked ashamed.
"We thought you'd panic."
"Correct."
"We thought you'd try to prove yourself to Derek instead of protecting yourself."
Also correct.
Sarah remembered calling him.
Begging him to come back.
Offering medical facts as if honesty were something he might reward.
Jessica whispered, "He said you'd sign quickly if he threatened public embarrassment."
Sarah looked down at her hands.
Derek had known her.
That was the most painful part.
He had used accurate knowledge of her habits, fears and loyalties.
The manipulation succeeded because it was personal.
Mia asked, "Where does Victor fit into the divorce plan?"
Jessica looked toward the windows.
"He was supposed to make sure nothing surprised Derek."
"How?"
"Monitoring Sarah."
Emily's voice was low.
"The Tahoe."
Jessica nodded.
"Probably."
"Probably?"
"I never met Victor more than twice."
"But you knew he was watching her."
"Yes."
Sarah spoke quietly.
"Did you know while pretending to be my friend?"
Jessica looked at her.
"No. That started before I knew about him."
It was not an excuse.
Sarah did not treat it like one.
"Where is the storage unit?"
Jessica wrote an address on a napkin.
Mia photographed it.
"Whose name?"
"Victor's company."
"Access code?"
Jessica wrote another number.
"How do you know it?"
"Derek sent me there yesterday."
"For what?"
"To remove the folder about the fake vasectomy."
Mia went still.
"Did you?"
Jessica shook her head.
"I took it."
Sarah stared.
"Where is it?"
"In my car."
Emily muttered something under her breath.
Mia stood.
"We're getting it now."
The folder contained more than Sarah expected.
Original fertility records.
Copies of the clinic consultation.
Receipts.
A handwritten list in Derek's writing.
Possible outcomes.
Under one heading: Pregnancy after procedure.
Bullet points followed.
Question fidelity.
Request DNA.
Delay reconciliation.
Pressure settlement.
Use M.
Sarah pointed.
"M."
Jessica answered.
"Margaret."
Sarah kept reading.
Another heading: No pregnancy.
Emphasize incompatibility.
Fertility strain.
Future goals.
Sarah closed the folder.
Derek had planned narratives as casually as an executive preparing a presentation.
Mia turned several pages.
Then she stopped.
"This is different."
Sarah looked.
There were copies of old emails between Sarah and Emily.
Private ones.
Messages Sarah had sent from an account Derek supposedly never accessed.
In one, Sarah wrote that she sometimes felt invisible in her own marriage.
The email was three years old.
Jessica whispered, "Victor probably got those."
Sarah's skin crawled.
Emily leaned closer.
"Keep going."
More emails.
Banking records.
Phone logs.
Photographs.
Sarah leaving a grocery store.
Sarah meeting Emily for lunch.
Sarah walking into Dr. Evans's office years earlier during fertility treatment.
One photograph showed Sarah crying in her car.
She remembered the day.
A negative test.
Derek had called and said he was stuck at work.
Someone had been photographing her.
Mia separated the surveillance material.
"This changes things."
"How?"
"Potential unlawful access. Harassment. Possibly more."
Sarah looked at a photograph of herself sitting in the driver's seat, unaware.
For years she had thought Derek's control came from knowing her well.
Now she understood part of his knowledge came from watching.
Jessica reached for another paper.
Then stopped.
"What is that?"
Sarah looked.
A report.
SUBJECT: EMILY ROSS.
Emily went rigid.
The document included her home address, employment, divorce history, former spouse, debt information.
Then another section.
Contact leverage.
Sarah felt her stomach turn.
"What is contact leverage?"
Jessica went pale.
Mia took the page.
"It means vulnerabilities."
Emily reached for it.
Mia hesitated.
"It's about me."
Mia handed it over.
Emily read silently.
Her face changed.
"My daughter."
Sarah's chest tightened.
Emily's daughter, Lily, was eleven.
"What does it say?"
Emily's voice shook.
"It lists her school."
Sarah stood.
The meeting ended immediately.
Mia contacted police.
This time the report was different.
A child was named.
A school identified.
The surveillance documents were extensive.
Officers arrived at the hotel and took statements.
Jessica handed over the storage address.
By evening, law enforcement had begun the process of obtaining legal access rather than allowing Sarah or anyone else to enter privately.
Sarah sat in Mia's conference room long after dark.
Emily was on the phone arranging for Lily to stay temporarily with her father.
Sarah stared at Derek's handwritten page.
Possible outcomes.
Every path led to Sarah losing.
Except one.
The path Derek never expected.
She fought back.
Mia returned from another call.
"They found Victor Shaw."
Sarah looked up.
"Where?"
"At the storage facility."
"Doing what?"
"Removing boxes."
Sarah's pulse quickened.
"Did they stop him?"
"Yes."
Mia sat.
"Sarah, there's something you need to prepare for."
"What?"
"One of the boxes wasn't about the divorce."
Sarah felt cold.
"What was it about?"
Mia looked toward Emily before answering.
"Your pregnancies."
Sarah stared.
"Pregnancies?"
Plural.
Mia's expression tightened.
"They found records suggesting Derek knew you had conceived once before."
