PART 4 – Derek Tried to Turn Everyone Against Me Before the DNA Test, but His Perfect Story Began Cracking in Front of the Woman Who Helped Him Build It

By nine the next morning, Derek had made their private disaster public.

Sarah woke to dozens of notifications.

People she had not spoken to in years were sending messages.

Some asked whether she was safe.

Others demanded explanations.

One former neighbor simply wrote, I saw Derek's video. Call me before you respond to anything.

Sarah's stomach tightened.

She opened the link.

Derek sat on a gray sofa.

Jessica was beside him.

Their hands were intertwined.

Sarah stared at that detail before she heard a single word.

Derek looked directly into the camera with the controlled sadness of a man who had rehearsed being wounded.

He said he had never wanted their marital problems made public.

Then he made them public.

He described himself as a husband devastated by infidelity.

He implied Sarah had conceived another man's child and then tried to use the pregnancy to claim his property.

He referred to her attorney as aggressive.

He said he had been forced to protect himself financially.

Then Jessica spoke.

She described Derek as a good man who had been emotionally abandoned long before their relationship changed.

Sarah stopped the video.

Emotionally abandoned.

Jessica had sat at Sarah's table for Christmas.

She had brought Sarah flowers after a minor surgery.

She had once sent a message saying Derek was lucky to have such a patient wife.

Now she was helping him rewrite the marriage in public.

Sarah took screenshots and sent everything to Mia.

"Do not respond online," Mia told her.

"He's telling everyone I cheated."

"I know."

"People believe him."

"Some will."

"He's calling me a thief."

"And every public statement he makes creates evidence."

Sarah closed her eyes.

"Evidence doesn't make it hurt less."

"No."

Mia's voice softened.

"But pain doesn't require you to make his legal strategy easier."

Sarah put the phone down.

Within an hour, strangers began finding her accounts.

Some called her a cheater.

Some called her a gold digger.

Someone posted her address.

Another person suggested she deserved to be taught a lesson.

Sarah's hands went cold.

She forwarded everything to Mia.

Then she removed the social applications from her phone.

At noon, the phone rang.

Emily.

Sarah stared at her sister's name.

Five months had passed since their last real conversation.

Derek disliked Emily because she asked questions he considered disrespectful.

Why did Sarah not have direct access to all their accounts?

Why did Derek become angry whenever Sarah discussed returning to work?

Why did he complain whenever Sarah spent a weekend with family?

Sarah had eventually stopped answering Emily's calls because every conversation created another argument with Derek.

Now she answered.

"Hello?"

"Where are you?"

No greeting.

No accusation.

Sarah's throat tightened.

"Home."

"Are you alone?"

"Yes."

"Are the doors locked?"

"Yes."

"Are you safe?"

Sarah looked around.

"I think so."

"You think?"

That was enough.

Sarah began crying.

"I'm pregnant."

Emily was silent.

"I saw his video."

"Twins."

Another silence.

"What?"

"I'm having twins."

Emily made a sound somewhere between a laugh and a sob.

"Sarah."

Sarah pressed a hand over her mouth.

"Two babies."

"Oh, God."

"I don't know what I'm doing."

"You don't have to know today."

Sarah closed her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

"For being pregnant?"

"For disappearing."

Emily's voice changed.

"You didn't disappear."

"I stopped calling."

"Because every time we talked, Derek punished you for it."

Sarah opened her eyes.

The sentence landed harder because Emily said it without hesitation.

"I should have listened."

"Listen now."

Two hours later, Emily arrived with groceries, a suitcase and an aluminum baseball bat.

Sarah stared at it.

"Seriously?"

Emily carried the bags inside.

"I also brought banana bread."

Despite everything, Sarah laughed.

It came out rusty and strange.

Emily looked at her.

Then they were both crying.

Her sister hugged her carefully.

"You are not staying alone."

"Derek won't like you being here."

Emily pulled back.

"That's becoming one of my favorite things about the arrangement."

Sarah laughed again.

That evening, she showed Emily the anonymous note.

Emily read it.

"Whoever wrote this knows something."

"Mia thinks so."

"Do you?"

"I don't know."

Sarah looked at the words.

Ask Derek why he chose Jessica.

"What if Jessica isn't just the woman he happened to have an affair with?"

Emily frowned.

"What else would she be?"

"I don't know."

Three days later, Derek was formally served with Sarah's court filing at his workplace.

Jessica called that afternoon from a blocked number.

Sarah almost ignored it.

Then she answered.

"You embarrassed him."

Jessica did not say hello.

Sarah sat at the kitchen table while Emily prepared tea.

"He made a video accusing me of adultery."

"You sent legal papers to his office."

"My attorney followed procedure."

"He could lose his promotion."

Sarah was surprised by how little sympathy she felt.

"Then perhaps he should stop creating problems at work."

"You have no idea what you're doing."

"I hired somebody who does."

Jessica's breathing sharpened.

"You think proving those babies are Derek's will make him come home?"

Sarah looked toward the ultrasound photographs on the refrigerator.

"No."

The answer came before she thought about it.

Jessica went quiet.

Sarah repeated it.

"I don't want him back."

Saying it changed something.

For days she had been defending herself as though proving innocence might restore the marriage.

Now she understood that innocence and reconciliation were separate things.

Derek could apologize.

The paternity test could vindicate her.

Jessica could disappear tomorrow.

None of it would erase the moment Derek looked at a long-awaited pregnancy and chose accusation.

"You don't mean that," Jessica said.

"I do."

"Derek said you'd pretend not to care."

Sarah almost smiled.

"What else did Derek say?"

"That you never really loved him."

Interesting.

Sarah leaned back.

"He told me something similar about you."

Jessica hesitated.

"What?"

Sarah chose her words carefully.

"He said you were convenient."

"You're lying."

"He said your apartment being close to his office made things easy."

Jessica's breathing changed.

Sarah continued.

"He brought you into my ultrasound because he expected me to be exposed. Did you ever ask yourself why a man who loves you would put you in that room?"

Jessica ended the call.

Emily stood in the doorway holding two mugs.

"Was that true?"

"Yes."

"All of it?"

"The part about the apartment."

Emily put down the mugs.

"You just cracked something."

"I didn't invent anything."

"That's why it cracked."

A week later, Sarah and Derek attended the private laboratory for the prenatal paternity test.

Mia had insisted on documented procedures.

Sarah provided a blood sample.

Derek provided the required sample under verified identification.

Jessica waited in the lobby wearing oversized sunglasses.

Derek barely looked at Sarah.

When the technician left, they were alone for less than a minute.

"Happy?" he asked.

"No."

"You demanded this."

"You demanded it."

"You agreed."

"Because I'm done allowing you to hide behind uncertainty."

Derek looked toward the door.

"When it comes back, things will change."

Sarah studied him.

"You still think you're right?"

"I think people surprise you."

"You're right about that."

His eyes narrowed.

The technician returned.

The moment ended.

Outside, Jessica stood when Derek emerged.

He placed a hand at her back.

Sarah watched them leave together.

Something about the gesture felt practiced.

Not intimate.

Coordinated.

She remembered the note.

Why he chose Jessica.

The question stayed with her.

Mia's financial investigation was moving quickly.

The transferred money had gone through more than one account.

Some had been moved into an account Sarah had never seen.

Other funds appeared connected to preparations Derek made before the pregnancy announcement.

Then Mia obtained a document related to the apartment where Derek was staying with Jessica.

She called Sarah into her office.

"I want you to look at this."

Sarah sat.

It was a rental application.

Derek Collins.

Jessica Hale.

Both names.

Sarah's eyes moved downward.

The application had been submitted before Sarah showed Derek the positive pregnancy test.

She looked at Mia.

"He was already moving in with her."

"Yes."

Sarah kept reading.

Near the bottom was a handwritten note from the leasing process.

The tenants intended to relocate again after a property matter involving Derek's spouse was resolved.

Sarah read it twice.

"He expected me to give up the house."

"He expected something."

"He knew about the divorce agreement."

"Almost certainly."

Sarah leaned back.

All the pieces were beginning to form a shape.

The accusation had been useful because Derek needed Sarah morally discredited.

If she believed she had somehow betrayed him, perhaps she would accept punishment.

Perhaps she would sign.

Perhaps she would surrender the house and money without fighting.

"He thought I would blame myself."

Mia watched her.

"Did you often?"

Sarah looked toward the window.

"Yes."

That evening, an unknown number sent Sarah a photograph.

She opened it while sitting beside Emily.

Derek and Jessica were inside a restaurant.

Sarah recognized Derek's jacket.

A timestamp appeared in the corner.

Nine months earlier.

Long before his vasectomy.

Long before Sarah's pregnancy.

Long before Derek claimed Sarah's supposed betrayal drove him into Jessica's arms.

Another photograph arrived.

Derek and Jessica kissing in a parking garage.

Emily swore under her breath.

Then came a message.

Jessica isn't the first.

Sarah typed immediately.

Who are you?

No response.

She called.

The number was already unavailable.

Mia asked Sarah to forward the photographs.

She did.

Then she enlarged the restaurant image.

A logo hung on the wall behind Derek.

Sarah recognized it.

A private downtown club.

Derek had attended company functions there.

He had repeatedly told Sarah that spouses were not permitted at those meetings.

Apparently Jessica had been permitted.

Mia began seeking records connected to Derek's spending.

The following afternoon, he called twelve times.

Sarah did not answer.

His message came next.

Stop trying to destroy my career.

Sarah stared at the words.

Then she replied.

I'm not destroying anything. I'm finding out what you did.

She blocked the number.

The paternity results arrived Friday afternoon.

Rain tapped against the bedroom windows.

Emily was downstairs making soup.

Sarah had begun folding two small yellow blankets her sister bought despite Sarah's insistence that it was too early to buy anything.

Her phone rang.

The laboratory.

Sarah's heart began pounding.

The representative informed her that the report had been uploaded to the secure portal and sent to Mia as an authorized recipient.

"Can you tell me what it says?"

"You'll need to review the report directly."

"Is something wrong?"

"I can't interpret it over the phone."

The call ended.

Sarah opened the portal.

The page loaded slowly.

Her name appeared.

Then Derek's.

Rows of genetic information followed.

Sarah understood none of it.

She scrolled.

At the bottom was the conclusion.

Derek could not be excluded as the biological father.

The stated probability exceeded 99.99 percent.

Sarah stopped breathing.

She read it again.

Then again.

Derek was the father.

She had known that.

There had never been another man.

Still, seeing the result released something she had been carrying since the bathroom door opened that first morning.

She sat on the edge of the bed and cried.

Emily found her minutes later.

"What happened?"

Sarah handed her the phone.

Emily read the result.

Her eyes filled.

"It's him."

"Yes."

"He can't deny them."

Sarah wiped her face.

"No."

Her phone began ringing.

Mia.

Sarah answered.

"I saw it."

"So did I," Mia said. "The result substantially strengthens your position, especially given Derek's public accusations."

"What happens now?"

"His attorney has already contacted me."

Sarah almost laughed.

"That fast?"

"Derek received his copy."

Another call appeared.

Derek.

Sarah ignored it.

Then Margaret.

Then Jessica.

She ignored them all.

"Mia?"

"There's something else."

The relief in Sarah's chest tightened.

"What?"

"The laboratory contacted my office about an identification issue."

"What kind?"

"They compared the identification Derek submitted with information from the clinic where he supposedly underwent his vasectomy."

Sarah stood.

"And?"

"The clinic has his consultation."

"Okay."

"They have a consent form."

Sarah waited.

"They have a scheduled procedure."

"Then what's wrong?"

Mia was quiet for half a second too long.

"They cannot find an operative record."

Sarah gripped the phone.

"What does that mean?"

"No surgical report. No anesthesia documentation. No confirmed procedure billing. No postoperative record establishing that a vasectomy actually occurred."

Sarah sat down again.

"That's impossible."

"I'm not saying conclusively what happened. They're rechecking."

"He came home afterward."

Sarah remembered it clearly.

Derek lying on the sofa.

An ice pack.

Pain medication.

His irritated expression whenever she came too close.

He had refused her offer to help change the dressing.

She had assumed embarrassment.

Now the memory changed shape.

"Mia."

"I'm here."

"Why would somebody pretend to have a vasectomy?"

"I don't know."

Sarah's phone vibrated.

A message from the unknown number.

There was a video attachment.

The thumbnail showed Derek in what appeared to be a parking structure.

A man in medical scrubs stood beside him.

Sarah's mouth went dry.

"Something just came through."

"From whom?"

"The same number."

"Don't delete it."

Sarah pressed play.

The recording was shaky, apparently taken from inside a parked vehicle.

Derek stood beside the man in scrubs.

He handed him an envelope.

The man checked what was inside.

Then Derek spoke.

The audio was imperfect, but Sarah recognized his voice.

He said he needed the documentation to appear convincing long enough for Sarah to accept it.

The other man answered too quietly to understand.

Derek spoke again.

This time every word was clear enough.

He said Sarah would blame herself.

Sarah stopped the video.

Her hands had begun shaking.

Emily sat beside her.

"What is it?"

Sarah could not answer.

Another message arrived.

The procedure was staged to create evidence against you.

Then another.

Jessica helped him plan it.

Sarah stared at the screen.

The pregnancy test.

The accusation.

The suitcase.

The ready apartment.

The drained accounts.

The divorce papers.

The false certainty that Derek could not be the father.

The pieces did not merely fit anymore.

They locked together.

Derek had not needed Sarah to cheat.

He had needed her to believe that everyone else would think she had.

Mia was still speaking through the phone.

"Sarah? Talk to me."

Sarah looked at the two yellow blankets on the bed.

Her children had not exposed Derek by accident.

Their existence had disrupted something he had prepared long before Sarah knew she was pregnant.

She picked up the phone.

"Mia."

"Yes?"

"I think the vasectomy was part of the divorce plan."

A pause.

"So do I."

Sarah looked again at the frozen video frame of her husband handing over the envelope.

For the first time since the pregnancy test turned positive, the question frightening her most was no longer whether Derek had betrayed her.

That had been answered.

The question now was how far back the plan went—and what else Derek and Jessica had prepared before Sarah ever knew she needed to defend herself.
