PART 3
My voice cracked.
“That’s the truth. I watched my daughter go to sleep. I kissed her forehead. A few hours later, she woke up screaming that something was biting her inside.”
I looked at Ethan.
“And then my husband accused me before anyone even knew the truth.”
Ethan immediately stood up.
“That’s not fair.”
Officer Lawson raised a hand.
“Mr. Carter, you’ll have your turn.”
Ethan sat back down, but his eyes never left me.
Those eyes used to make me feel safe.
Tonight, they made me feel like I was standing next to a stranger.
Officer Lawson connected to the camera system.
“The dining room camera has recordings from the last seven days. You said the sculpture was inside the locked cabinet?”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“Who had access to the house?”
I started counting.
“My husband. Me. My neighbor has an emergency key. My mother-in-law had one years ago, but she said she returned it.”
Officer Lawson looked up.
“She said?”
I hesitated.
“I never personally saw her return it.”
He wrote something down.
Then he pressed play.
The screen showed our dining room from Sunday afternoon.
The family dinner.
Exactly as I remembered.
My mother-in-law, Eleanor, sitting at the table.
Her perfect smile.
Her expensive jewelry.
Her careful words.
She had always been the type of woman who looked kind in front of others but somehow made you feel small when nobody was watching.
The video continued.
Guests moved around.
Chloe played with her dolls near the dining room.
Then came the moment that made my stomach twist.
At 4:17 PM.
I walked into the kitchen to bring out dessert.
Chloe was alone in the dining room.
But she wasn’t playing.
She was standing in front of the cabinet.
My heart started pounding.
“Pause it.”
Officer Lawson stopped the video.
I leaned closer.
“There.”
My finger pointed at the screen.
“She didn’t open it.”
The cabinet door was still closed.
Officer Lawson continued.
A minute passed.
Then something moved in the corner of the camera.
Someone entered the dining room.
The person was partially blocked by the tall plant near the window.
But the clothes were visible.
A dark blue sweater.
Black pants.
A gold bracelet.
My blood went cold.
I knew that bracelet.
Ethan knew it too.
Because it belonged to Eleanor.
My mother-in-law.
Ethan suddenly stood up.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
“No, that’s impossible.”
Officer Lawson looked at him.
“Do you recognize the person?”
Ethan’s face changed.
Only for a moment.
But it was enough.
“I… I don’t know.”
The officer didn’t answer.
He simply continued watching.
On the screen, Eleanor looked around the room.
She checked the hallway.
She checked the kitchen.
Then she reached inside her purse.
And pulled something out.
A small key.
My breathing stopped.
“The cabinet key,” I whispered.
Ethan looked at me.
“Natalie…”
I ignored him.
On the screen, Eleanor unlocked the cabinet.
She removed the magnetic sculpture.
Then she looked directly at the camera.
Not accidentally.
Not because she noticed it.
She looked straight into it.
Almost like she knew it was recording.
Then she smiled.
A cold, slow smile.
Officer Lawson paused the video.
Nobody spoke.
The silence felt heavier than anything I had ever experienced.
Then Ethan whispered:
“My mother…”
I turned toward him.
“Your mother had the key.”
He rubbed his face.
“No. She wouldn’t…”
But even he didn’t sound convinced.
Officer Lawson looked between us.
“Do you know why she would take the magnets?”
I stared at the frozen image.
The woman who had held my daughter.
The woman who called Chloe her “little angel.”
The woman who had spent years telling Ethan that I wasn’t good enough for him.
“I don’t know.”
Then something else appeared on the screen.
A few seconds after Eleanor left with the sculpture.
Another person entered the dining room.
My heart dropped again.
Because this time…
I recognized the person immediately.
It was Ethan.
He walked into the dining room.
He looked around.
Then he picked up his phone.
He wasn’t surprised.
He wasn’t confused.
He acted like he knew something had happened.
Officer Lawson pressed play.
Ethan stood there for almost three minutes.
Then he called someone.
The audio was faint, but the camera had a microphone.
Officer Lawson increased the volume.
Ethan’s voice filled the hospital waiting room.
“Mom… are you sure?”
A pause.
Then Ethan continued.
“She can’t know.”
My hands became cold.
Officer Lawson looked at me.
Ethan looked terrified.
The recording continued.
“After tonight, Natalie won’t have any choice. She’ll leave. And Chloe will stay with us.”
My entire body froze.
I looked at my husband.
The man I married.
The father of my child.
“What did you just say?”
Ethan didn’t answer.
His silence was the answer.
Officer Lawson stopped the recording.
“Mr. Carter, I need you to explain what we just heard.”
Ethan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then suddenly, the operating room doors opened.
A doctor walked out.
Everyone turned.
I ran toward her.
“Doctor?”
She removed her mask.
“Chloe is stable.”
My knees almost collapsed.
“But…”
That one word made my heart stop again.
“But what?”
The doctor looked serious.
“The magnets caused damage. We removed all thirty-six pieces, but we need to monitor her closely.”
I grabbed the doctor’s hand.
“Can I see her?”
“In a few minutes.”
I closed my eyes.
For the first time that night, I let myself breathe.
My daughter was alive.
But as I looked back at Ethan…
I realized something worse than the magnets had been hidden inside my family.
A secret.
A betrayal.
And the person I trusted most might have been the person who put my daughter’s life in danger.
Officer Lawson stepped closer to Ethan.
“Mr. Carter, we need to continue this conversation at the station.”
Ethan looked at me one last time.
His expression wasn’t anger anymore.
It was fear.
But before the officer could take him away, my phone rang.
It was an unknown number.
I answered.
A woman’s voice whispered:
“Natalie… don’t trust the police.”
I froze.
“Who is this?”
The woman breathed heavily.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“I know why Eleanor gave your daughter the magnets.”
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Who are you?”
There was a pause.
Then the woman replied:
“I’m the reason your husband wanted you gone.”
The call ended.
I stood there in the hospital hallway…
Realizing the nightmare was far from over.
Because the magnets were never the real secret.
They were only the beginning.
